Halestorm‘s been chipping away at new material for some time now, and frontwoman Lzzy Hale has noticed how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected her approach to writing.

“The demos and the songs that I was writing before the pandemic and before everything else going on in the world…there’s a lot of that that I’m still keeping,” Hale tells ABC Audio. “But I’ve just been moving forward in a rapid speed.”

Part of that moving forward finds Hale speaking her “truth” more and more in her writing, which has resulted in some of the new songs being “honest to a fault.”

“I could sit down today and write three or four ‘Love Bites (So Do I)’ or one of our hits from our past, ’cause that’s somewhere where I’ve come from,” she explains. “But it takes a certain amount of guts to move forward.”

As for when we’ll get to hear what that sounds like, Hale says that’s still in flux.

“There’s nothing that’s, like, ‘Alright, that is the completed album, and we don’t have to worry about that anymore,'” Hale shares.

“We thought we had that, like, two times ago,” she laughs. “So now we just keep writing and it keeps evolving.”

Whenever an album does come together, though, Hale’s excited about the results.

“I feel like by the time that we get to that point, it’s going to be probably the best material that we’ve ever been able to do,” she says. “And I’m not saying that in any egotistical way, I’m just saying on a personal level, I think that that’s one of the beautiful things to come out of this time.”

Halestorm’s most recent album is 2018’s Vicious.
