A Pilot’s Sneaky Hack for Not Wearing a Mask

A jewel thief carried out a burglary . . . and got away on a scooter . . . because everyone was distracted by Jean-Claude Van Damme, who was in a nearby optometrist’s office.  The police have a couple suspects in custody.  (Full Story)

60 year old comic KATHY GRIFFIN announced that she’s been diagnosed with lung cancer. In a post (link) on Instagram, she was about to go into surgery to have half of her left lung removed and the doctors are very optimistic, as it is Stage One. If everything goes well, the surgery might take care of it.  In that case, she’d be able to avoid chemo and radiation, and she should retain normal function with her breathing.  When some people think of lung cancer they think of cigarettes.  But Kathy said she’s “never smoked.”  She does have a family history of cancer, for what that’s worth.  Four years ago, Kathy shaved her head in honor of her sister who was battling cancer.  Sadly, she’s since passed.  And she also lost a brother to cancer in 2014. That said, there’s also some longevity in her genes.  Her mother passed away last year at the age of 99.  Kathy is 60.

52 year old HUGH JACKMAN is undergoing a skin biopsy over a possible cancer scare, and that’s why he has a bandage on his nose.  Mr Jackman underwent treatment for skin cancer in 2017.  At the time, he said that he wished he wore sunscreen more as a kid.

RATT’s Stephen Pearcy who is 65 years old has been battling liver cancer – for the last three years! After testing positive for hepatitis, Pearcy’s doctor told him during a checkup.  He says his treatment is going well but urges everyone to get blood tests.

Skateboarding star Terry Kennedy has just been charged with 1st-degree murder after the man Kennedy allegedly attacked at an Illinois motel last week died over the weekend. Kennedy is now facing up to life behind bars if convicted. Kennedy attacked 23-year-old Josiah Kassahun in Oakbrook Terrace, IL on July 27 and then left the scene. He was eventually located, arrested, and initially booked for several charges, including aggravated battery in a public place and threatening a public official. But now it’s a murder charge because the vitim died. Kennedy is a big star in the skating world … he’s appeared in the popular “Skate” video games — and has often boarded with Rob Dyrdek (link) over the years.

Over the weekend, MATT DAMON was trending because of an interview (link) where he said he recently “retired” the gay slur that starts with an F, after his daughter wrote him a “long, beautiful” essay on why it’s dangerous. Now, he’d like to clarify a few things For starters, Matt says the discussion with his daughter was not a moment of “personal awakening.”  He claims he’s never called anyone the six-letter version in his “personal life,” and does not “use slurs of any kind.” Instead, he says he was trying to tell his daughter about the progress that’s been made since he was a kid, when he’d hear the three-letter version “constantly and casually” in the streets . . . before he even knew what it meant. He says she couldn’t understand how it could EVER have been used so flippantly, and how painful that word would’ve been.  Even if it was “culturally normalized.” Matt says he stands with the LGBT community.

The viewers for NBC’s primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics continue to stay away in droves.   The 14.5 million viewers through the first eight days of the Olympics is down 48% compared to Rio in 2016 and 58% from London in 2012. The smallest audience of the games on Friday night was 11.7 million. The total was down 51% from the 24 million people who tuned in for the equivalent night of the Rio games and 59% compared to the 28.5 million viewers who tuned in for the comparable night of the London Olympics. There is a 67% drop for people age 12-17 and a 63% drop for adults age 18-34 compared to the Rio games. The opening ceremony drew the smallest audience for the network broadcast since the 1988 Seoul Games. Viewership hasn’t picked up, with everything from the time difference and COVID protocols to a lack of star power and “woke” athletes being blamed for the massive decline. NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell (link) insisted  … We’re going to be profitable on the Olympics.”

SNL’s Colin Jost (link) and his brother Casey Jost (link) will co-write a new untitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (link) film for Paramount (link) Pictures. Michael Bay, and a few others will produce. Paramount relaunched the franchise with Bay’s Platinum Dunes in 2014 with a new spin different from the New Line pics from the 1990s. The film went on to gross $485 million globally with a sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, in 2016.

Some actors do their own stunts . . . but not all.  There’s a list going around.

  1. That scene in “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark” where Indy is outrunning a 300-pound boulder? HARRISON FORD actually did it himself . . . 10 times.
  1. Season One of “Malcolm in the Middle”, BRYAN CRANSTON’scharacter had to be covered in 10,000 live bees. Bryan volunteered to do the scene himself . . . and he only got stung ONCE.

Kurt Cobain (link)’s childhood home has been declared a Washington state landmark. The current homeowner is planning to turn it into a museum with private tours available starting in early 2022. Kurt lived there from 1968 to 1984, long before Nirvana (link). The one-and-a-half story house was approved for the Washington State’s ‘Heritage Register,’ which preserves culturally important buildings. The owner, Lee Bacon cant make it a full-time museum, but he will open the house for the occasional private tour. Bacon purchased the home from the Cobain family in 2018 for a reported $225,000. Original furniture from the Cobains remains in the home, with input from Kim Cobain (Kurt’s sister) being considered for the museum. Bacon has also purchased a 25,000-square-foot building in downtown Aberdeen with the intent of creating a 8,000-square-foot ‘Tribute Lounge and Gallery Cafe’ dedicated to Cobain.

They have won eight Grammys and sold over 125 million albums worldwide, not to mention the statistical breakdown that names them as the world’s biggest touring band ever (link).  Congratulations to Metallica (link) for reaching one billion views on YouTube for what music video? (‘Black Album’ track, “Nothing Else Matters.”). Over the last 13 months, a number of rock and metal music videos have hit the coveted one billion mark. Linkin Park’s “In the End (link)” in early July of last year, System of a Down’s “Chop Suey (link)” reached one billion views in late November of last year and just over one month ago, Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life (link)” did the same.

A new documentary titled Becoming Led Zeppelin has been completed, though a release date hasn’t been revealed yet. It marks the band’s 50th anniversary and will include new interviews with surviving members Jimmy Page (link)Robert Plant (link) and John Paul Jones (link). The film will also feature archival interviews with the late John Bonham (link). According to a statement from 2019, the film “traces the journeys of the four members through the music scene of the 1960s, their meeting in the summer of 1968 for a rehearsal that will change the future of rock and culminates in 1970 when their second album (link) knocks the Beatles (link) off the top of the charts, and they become the number one band in the world.” Becoming Led Zeppelin will be the first time Led Zeppelin (link) have participated in and endorsed a movie based on their career.

We get to see Jon Lester as a Cardinal tonight as the Braves are in town for a series against the Cards at Busch.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:15PM.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole has tested positive for COVID-19. Cole was scheduled to start Tuesday night’s game against the Orioles. Now, Yankees manager Aaron Boone expects lefty Nestor Cortes to get the nod. New York has already worked through two different COVID-19 outbreaks within the organization this season and while Cole is currently the only player to test positive, that could change in the coming days.

Sports Business Journal says the NFL is mandating COVID-19 vaccines for all employees.  Employees have until September 6th to get vaccinated. Employees with qualifying disabilities or “sincere religious beliefs” were told to apply for an exemption so that the league’s attorneys and HR could look over each request. The NFL had already said that any team affected by a COVID outbreak during the season will be forced to forfeit affected games while also withholding checks for an outbreak among anyone unvaccinated. Unvaccinated players could also be fined over $14,000 every time they violate  COVID-19 protocol.

Quick question – who does Carson Wentz play for in the NFL?  If you’re like me, you totally forgot that he signed with the Indianapolis Colts during the off-season.  And now, you’re wondering why the hell I am asking.  Well, Wentz had foot surgery and he will now be out between 5-12 weeks.  That means a lot of folks are looking at Nick Foles who is hanging out in limbo in Chicago.  However – Foles and his agent have said that FOR NOW – no one has come calling.

NBA Free Agency started with a BANG yesterday.  Chris Paul re-signed with the Suns.  The Hawks extended Trae Young up to $207 million.  Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso signed with the Bulls.  Plus the Raptors and Heat worked out a sign and trade to send Kyle Lowry to Miami. Also, the Heat agreed to sign NBA Champion PJ Tucker to a 2-year $15 million dollar deal.  At the beginning of free agency yesterday, the LA Lakers had 4 players on the roster, and after adding five former players, including Dwight Howard, they now have 7 roster spots still open.

For the third straight Summer Olympics, Kevin Durant has been an offensive powerhouse as he has overwhelmed everyone in Tokyo with his shooting skill. He was unstoppable in London, was “ehhhhh” in Rio and has been the lifeblood of a flawed Team USA in Tokyo. Durant’s shooting rescued the Americans again Tuesday as they overcame a 10-point deficit to beat Spain 95-81 and advance to the semifinals of the Olympic men’s basketball tournament, in which they will play either Australia or Argentina on Thursday.

As of last night, the U.S. and China were still neck and neck in the Olympics medal count.  But the track-and-field events have started up, and we usually do very well there.  We won 32 medals in track-and-field last time.  China only won six. Our first gold in those events came yesterday when Valarie Allman won the women’s discus.  And we picked up some silvers as well:  Kendra Harrison in the women’s 100-meter hurdles . . . Rai Benjamin in the men’s 400-meter hurdles . . . Brittney Reese in long jump.We also snagged another gold in gymnastics when Jade Carey won the women’s floor.  And earlier this morning, Simone Biles returned alongside Suni Lee in the balance beam final.   Here’s the latest medal count we saw.

  1. USA:  66. . . 22 gold, 27 silver, 17 bronze.
  2. China:  66. . . 31 gold, 19 silver, 16 bronze.
  3. Russia:  50. . . 12 gold, 21 silver, 17 bronze.
  4. Great Britain:  39 . . . 13 gold, 13 silver, 13 bronze.
  5. Japan:  34. . . 18 gold, 6 silver, 10 bronze.
