He played Prince’s Dad in Purple Rain (1984) and was Wesley Snipes and Michael Wright’s druggie dad in Sugar Hill (1993  52 Pick-Up (1986) and then on The General’s Daughter (1999), Reindeer Games (2000) I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (1988) and the maniacal drug lord Samson Simpson in the classic Half-Baked (1998), starring Dave Chappelle.

Film and television actress Lisa Banes is in a critical condition after being struck by a driver on Friday in New York City. Banes’ credits include Gone Girl, Nashville, Royal Pains and Masters of Sex. She had been on her way to visit Juilliard, her alma mater, when the accident occurred, according to her rep. The New York Police Department did say that a pedestrian was hit by “an unknown scooter or motorcycle” near the corner of West 64th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Banes, 65, is currently in critical condition with substantial injuries and being cared for at at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital.

DRAKE BELL from “Drake & Josh” was arrested in Ohio last week on two charges . . . “attempted child endangerment” . . . and “disseminating matter harmful to juveniles”.   He allegedly had an inappropriate interaction with a 15-year-old girl at his Cleveland concert back in 2017.  And also sent her inappropriate social media messages for months leading up to the concert. Drake pleaded not guilty and was released on a $2,500 bond.  Now he has to go to court later this month over Zoom for a pre-trial hearing. His lawyer said, quote, “All facts will be revealed in a courtroom.” Weird Drake fact: Lately he’s been releasing music in Spanish under the name Drake Campana

PRINCE HARRY and MEGHAN MARKLE welcomed their daughter on Friday.  Her name is Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor . . . Lili for short. Lili is named after QUEEN ELIZABETH, whose family nickname is Lilibet.  She’s the Queen’s 11th great-grandchild.  The Diana in her name obviously comes from Harry’s mother.  Harry and Meghan also have a 2-year-old son named Archie. The Royal Family Tweeted, quote, “Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of Lilibet Diana!  The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted with the news.” And PRINCE WILLIAM and KATE MIDDLETON said they are, quote, “Wishing them all well at this special time.”

The Matrix 4 has a returning cast of Keanu ReevesCarrie Ann-MossJada Pinkett-Smith,  but now lets sprinkle in Christina Ricci. No clue yet what role she will have. Neil Pstrick Harris is also in the film. The Matrix 4 still doesn’t have an official description or official title, but I do know of simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22nd. All three previous films are currently available to stream on Peacock.

’ The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It made a $24 million here and $26.8 million. Even more impressive is it is also available at no extra charge to HBO Max customers.  The second A Quiet Place  has made close to $100 million globally. The first film received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%, while its sequel scored 90%.

We are fans of nature documentaries. The cameras they use now are crazy good. The close ups are amazing. Even the sounds. Check out this montage of mushrooms growing, a spider walking across a web, a spider shooting its web and a bear blinking its eyes. It can be hard to capture natural sounds for various reasons. That’s why its all fake. The guy who creates those sounds in a studio is called a foley artist.  And a profile on a foley artist named Richard Hinton shows some of those tricks . . . like stretching out a slinky to add sound to a spider shooting a web. Or tapping on strands of audio tape to simulate the sounds of a spider’s footsteps.  He even makes sounds for the Northern Lights, a time-lapse video of mushrooms growing, and flowing lava.

After about 40 years and 10 albums…In a series of tweets over the weekend, Sinéad O’Connor tweeted over the weekend that she is packing it in and retiring from her career in touring and recording music. Prince wrote it but she sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” that peaked at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 1990. She has music coming out in 2022 but that’s no more music or touring.  That means all shows which were originally set for 2020, rescheduled to 2021 and then to 2022 are going to be pulled. Because…”this soldier woman has grown old quicker than covid.”

“Total Guitar” magazine readers voted for the greatest guitar riffs of all time. Here are the Top Ten . . .

The Cardinals got swept this weekend by the Cincinnati Reds and yesterday’s game was filled with highs and lows.  The lows….the Cardinals were at once down 7-0.  The highs…in the 6th they scored 7 to tie things up.  The low….Jesse Winker hit 3 homeruns including the game winner in the top of the 9th.  Ugly weekend for the Cards.  They are off today but welcome the Indians into Busch tomorrow night.  Carlos Martinez gets the start.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:15PM.

The hyped-up Floyd Mayweather / Logan Paul fight wound up ending with no knockouts, no knockdowns and a lot of hugs.  The exhibition match went the full 8 rounds. There was no official decision because there were no official judges. ESPN scored the bout 78-74 for Mayweather. If there were judges, most feel Mayweather would have won hands down. The winners were both Mayweather and Paul by getting people to pay $50 for this fight.

The Atlanta Falcons agreed to trade star wide receiver Julio Jones to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. In exchange for Jones, the Titans will send a 2022 second-round draft pick and a 2023 fourth-round selection to the Falcons. Along with Jones, the Falcons will send a 2023 sixth-round pick to the Titans. The deal is pending a physical.

The match between the United States and Mexico was overshadowed by unruly fan behavior that included objects thrown on the field and a brief pause in the game due to fans using an anti-gay chant. The pause occurred during the final moments of the second half before the game went to extra time in the U.S. men’s national team’s 3-2 win. Referee John Pitti resumed the match after three minutes as players on both sides pleaded with the crowd to stop using the chant. After Christian Pulisic netted the would-be game winner off a penalty and ran to the corner to celebrate with the rest of his teammates, Giovanni Reyna was hit in the face with an object as fans in the stands threw items such as cups and water bottles onto the field. Reyna, who scored the USMNT’s first goal in the first half, lay on the ground for several minutes before walking off the field with trainers. As the game neared its conclusion, a fan ran onto the field before being tackled and escorted off the field by security personnel. Reyna later returned to the field following the match’s conclusion for the trophy celebrations.

The United States Football League announced Thursday that it plans on returning in the spring of 2022.  The league, which initially launched in 1983 but halted its operations after the ’85 season, will target a minimum of eight teams instead of the 12 it initially consisted of and will utilize Fox Sports as its broadcast partner. Fox Sports, according to the official release, also owns a minority equity stake in the company that owns the USFL. The initial version of the league featured a number of standout players, including running back Herschel Walker and quarterbacks Doug Flutie and Steve Young.

It was a historic day for Yuka Saso on Sunday when she tied the record for the youngest golfer to ever win the U.S. Women’s Open at 19 years old. She’s also the first Filipino person to ever win a major. Saso birdied on the final hole during a playoff and was doused with water after sinking the final putt.  She finished 4-under.  Speaking of golf…

In many ways, this year’s Memorial Tournament was a return to normalcy. The tournament was played at its traditional time of year, and spectators were back in numbers large enough to fit the view that the pandemic is ebbing. Then came Saturday night’s stunning announcement. Jon Rahm, the defending champion whose third-round 64 gave him a six-shot lead, had to withdraw because of a positive coronavirus test. Tournament officials said they found out about Rahm’s positive test at the same time as everyone else. Rahm bent over and started to tear up when a doctor told him off the 18th green about the COVID test result.  Patrick Cantlay ended up winning the tournament.

Serena Williams turns 40 in September. Roger Federer hits that milestone the month before. No one knows how many more French Open appearances each will make, and this year’s tournament ended for both on Sunday. Williams fell way behind and could not put together a comeback. That defeat came hours after Federer withdrew, saying he needed to let his body recover ahead of Wimbledon after a long third-round victory that ended at nearly 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Olivia Moultrie is on the verge of signing a NWSL contract, bringing the 15-year-old midfielder one step closer to playing in the league. The Portland Thorns have reportedly traded a third-round draft pick for the rights to sign Moultrie in a trade with OL Reign, who acquired Moultrie’s rights in a “first-come, first-served” discovery process. Moultrie has trained and played in preseason games for the Thorns over the past two years, but was not allowed by to play in official NWSL matches.  Moultrie, who turned pro after signing a Nike endorsement deal at 13 years old, is currently suing the league for its age rule barring players under 18 from signing with a team.
