Videos of the Tonga Volcano, and Tsunami Waves
There are some incredible videos of the volcanic eruption in the South Pacific, and the tsunami waves that followed. Here are a few that caught our eye . . .
This satellite imagery shows shockwaves AND the massive cloud of smoke rising from the ocean. It’s about a two-hour timeline compressed down to 16 seconds. (It was posted January 14th on the @BNONews Twitter.)
This video from SPACE gives you four different looks at the volcano exploding into view. (Search Space.com for “Hunga Tonga Volcano Erupts Again, Triggers Tsunami – Seen From Space!“)
Here’s a clip from Tonga showing the tsunami coming ashore, ripping down a fence, and chasing cars down a road. (It was posted January 14th on the Twitter page of @JTuisinu. Here’s another clip of the tsunami coming ashore in Tonga.)
And even though there were tons of tsunami warnings on the West Coast to stay out of the water, surfers went in anyway. At least two of them had to be rescued. (Here’s a report from KPIX-TV in San Francisco . . . and a story in the “L.A. Times“.)
Today Is “Blue Monday” . . . the Most Depressing Day of the Year
Today is “Blue Monday,” which is supposed to be the most depressing day of the year. A British psychologist came up with it in 2005.
Blue Monday is typically the third Monday of January, and this day was picked because it’s the perfect mix of all of the factors that make us depressed: Crappy weather . . . high debt from the holidays . . .
The realization of how far away NEXT Christmas is and how far away we are from our next vacation . . . failing on our New Year’s resolutions . . . and low motivation at work. And now, we’re also facing a surging viral pandemic.
Nothing about this sounds uplifting, but it wasn’t meant to be a downer.
The guy who came up with Blue Monday, Dr. Cliff Arnall, says it was, “never [the] intention to make the day sound negative . . . [but] to inspire people to take action and make bold life decisions.” (He’s also calculated the HAPPIEST day of the year, which falls about three weeks into June every year.)
The “Sleepy Chicken Challenge” Has People Boiling Their Chicken in NyQuil
Here’s your first really dumb TikTok challenge of the year. And of course it’s incredibly dangerous too . . .
There’s a new “HEALTH” trend on TikTok called the Sleepy Chicken Challenge . . . that involves boiling your chicken dinner in NYQUIL. (???)
Someone somewhere got the idea in their head that it can cure a cold. But there’s no evidence to back that up, and it could actually KILL you instead.
Basically, you put a single chicken breast in a pot . . . dump up to half-a-bottle of NyQuil in there . . . and braise or boil it until it’s cooked. Hopefully FULLY cooked . . . people seem to be having trouble with that part.
It’s dangerous even if you do fully cook it though. For two reasons . . .
First, it’s just an insane amount of NyQuil. When you boil it down, the water and alcohol evaporate, but the drugs are still in there. So you’re basically loading a chicken breast up with WAY too much medicine, and you could overdose.
But also, when you boil liquid medicine like that, you can end up inhaling some of it, which is also bad.
When that happens, it bypasses your liver and goes straight into your bloodstream without any toxins being filtered out. And just that alone can mess you up.
Scream, the fifth movie in the Scream series debuted at number 1 at the box office, bringing in an estimated $30.6 million, and is projected to earn $35 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. The movie cost $25 million to produce. Spider-Man: No Way Home falls to number 2 in its fifth weekend with an estimated $25 million for the holiday weekend. Sometime on it will become one of the few films ever to cross the $700 million mark at the domestic box office.
If I talk about you in the first part of Crap On you are either dead, getting a divorce or got arrested. TIFFANY HADDISH is alive. Far as I know all is ok in her love life. So yea she was arrested early Friday morning for driving under the influence and improper stopping on a roadway in Georgia. The cops were called because she was allegedly falling asleep at the wheel. Peachtree City Police pulled Tiffany over as she pulled into a neighborhood. They believe she’d smoked marijuana. Peachtree City is a little over 30 miles away from Atlanta. Tiffany was released a few hours later after posting $1,666 bond. She even smiled for her mugshot.
KANYE WEST has a new song with The Game called Easy and people are saying he is threatening Pete Davidson. Pete is currently riding the hobby horse with Kim Kardashian Kanye’s ex. Here is the clip in question, its subtle so really listen. It’s also a bit of a love letter to new girl JULIA FOX. He says, quote, “My new [B-word] bad, I know Illuminati mad.” THEN….On Saturday, Kim threw a 4th birthday party for their daughter Chicago . . . and Kanye posted a video claiming he wasn’t invited. He said nobody would even tell him where the party was . . . until TRAVIS SCOTT finally tipped him off. And when he showed up, security stopped him, but KYLIE let him in. Sources say Kim has no idea what Kanye is going on about, because she did NOT try to keep him away. There are pictures of him at the party, and everyone seems to be getting along. Although there are no shots of him with Kim. Also, they say the plan was for Kanye to have his own celebration with Chicago later in the day, which he did.
Karma just hit LORI LOUGHLIN and her husband MOSSIMO GIANNULLI in the face. Someone broke into their house on January 3rd and stole her jewelry box . . . which had about $1 million worth of bling in it. The theft was discovered by a housekeeper. Surveillance video shows the thieves were dressed in all black and wore masks. Police think they were part of a South American crew that travels to the U.S., hits a bunch of locations, then leaves the country. The rudders and the oars were nowhere to be found because they never owned any.
South Park is finally returning for weekly episodes starting February 2nd. The show’s production was impacted by the pandemic. South Park, by the way, is turning 25 this year so it’s a big season! The new season will consist of six new episodes. The show’s creators also signed a deal last year that runs through 2027 for 14 exclusive projects for Paramount+, as well as South Park being renewed through Season 30.
Netflix will be raising prices. If you have the basic plan, your bill is going up from $8.99 to $9.99 . . . the standard plan is going from $13.99 to $15.49 . . . and the premium plan is up TWO BUCKS, from $17.99 to $19.99. The last time they hiked their prices was in October of 2020
Looks like TIM ALLEN has been missing the North Pole lately, because he’s going to put on his Santa suit again. He’ll star in and produce a limited “Santa Clause” series for Disney+. It’ll be about how his character Scott is going to be turning 65 and realizing that he needs to find a replacement to be Santa Claus, so he can return to the normal world with his family. A release date hasn’t been announced, but production is supposed to start in March.
NBC is going to air an hour-long BETTY WHITE tribute special called “Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl” on January 31st at 10 p.m. It’ll include tributes from Betty’s friends and former co-stars of Betty, plus clips from throughout her career. In related news, Betty’s birthday is TODAY, so Google is celebrating with rose petals and a message when you search her name
With no apologies to James Corden The Offspring are doing “Cockpit Karaoke”. Turns out Offspring frontman Dexter Holland is a pilot, showing off his skills while he and guitarist Noodles sing their 2021 hit, “Let The Bad Times Roll”. Holland told Spin last year it that the band just wants to “have some fun and sing along” to some of their tunes. Check out The Offspring’s first installment of “Cockpit Karaoke”, too, with Holland and Noodles singing “Come Out and Play”.
After about 6 years both the IRS and the administrator for Prince’s estate have agreed to value The Purple One’s estate at $156.4 million. The estate’s administrator said it was only worth around $82 million; the IRS had it valued at just over $163 million. Now that this battle is over, it’s reported that “the estate will be almost evenly divided between a well-funded New York music company – Primary Wave – and the three oldest of the music icon’s six heirs or their families.”

Interesting game on Saturday for the Blues. A total of 11 goals were scored and it was a back and forth game pretty much the entire time. Unfortunately, the Leafs picked up the 6-5 win. Before the game on Saturday – Pavel Buchnevich was placed on the COVID list. This leaving just Jordan Kyrou as the lone Blue who has NOT gotten COVID or been placed on the COVID list.
Tonight there are some big doins’ at Enterprise Center. Not only do the Blues take on the Predators at 7PM, but if you play on going to or watching the game, make sure you get their early because at 6PM the Blues will be hoisting Chris Prongers’ number up into the rafters. Again, festivities begin at 6PM.
Lets chat NFL Super Wild Card Weekend. On Saturday, the Bengals and the Raiders started things off. With a little bit of controversy…the Bengal’s picked up their first playoff win in over 30 years. Final score 26-19. The night game had the Patriots taking on the Bills in Buffalo and Josh Allen was on fire. The Bills destroyed the Patriots 47-17. On Saturday we saw the Bucs easily take care of the Eagles. Then the 49ers and Cowboys played a game in which San Fran dominated most of the game but the last 10 minutes things got interesting. Including, a last minute clock kill play that probably would have worked if the ref had not bumped into Dak Prescott trying to set the ball. Finals score in that game was 23-17. And finally – its donezo for Big Ben in Pittsburgh and perhaps the NFL. His Steelers were beat by the Chiefs 42-21 as Patrick Mahomes set an NFL record by throwing 5 touchdown passes in just over 10 minutes of actual game play. Tonight it’s the Rams vs. Cardinals in LA. Kick off is scheduled for 7:15PM.
But we do have the schedule for next weekend already. The Bengals will take on the Titans in Tennessee on Saturday at 3:30. The 49ers will play the Packers at 7:15PM that night. On Sunday, the winner of tonights game will take on the Bucs at 2PM. And then the Bills and Chiefs will play at 5:30PM.
Referee Jerome Boger and the officials that worked the AFC wild-card game between the Raiders and Bengals on Saturday are not expected to officiate another game this postseason. As noted by ESPN, the league grades officials after each game, and Boger and his crew are not expected to receive high marks for Saturday’s contest. Among the more controversial moments, they ruled that a whistle was blown after Cincinnati wide receiver Tyler Boyd caught a touchdown from quarterback Joe Burrow, despite replays appearing to show otherwise. Cincinnati would go on to defeat Las Vegas, 26–19, to advance to the divisional round of the playoffs.
The Lakers are off to a disappointing start to their season and LeBron James decided to address fans on Sunday in the form of an apology to the Los Angeles faithful. “#LakerNation I apologize and I promise we’ll be better!” James said in the Tweet. The Lakers are 21–22 on the season and find themselves barely in the playoff picture at the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference. It’s been a troubling start for a team that fully expected to contend for a championship this year after trading for Russell Westbrook. Los Angeles has also been without star Anthony Davis for some time. They’re just 5–5 in their last 10 contests despite James, 37, putting up incredible numbers. He’s averaging 28.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. The Lakers’ woes are clearly not on James, nevertheless, he’s apologizing for it.
Hideki Matsuyama overcame a five-shot deficit and defeated Russell Henley in a one-hole playoff to win the Sony Open on Sunday in Honolulu. Matsuyama – who finished -23 — shot seven under for the second straight day in the final round. It’s the 2021 Masters champion’s second win of the 2021-22 season after he was victorious at the Zozo Championship in October.
Twenty-time major singles champion Novak Djokovic left Australia on Sunday after losing a legal challenge against a decision which revoked his visa from the country for the second time. In a virtual hearing, three Federal Court judges unanimously dismissed Djokovic’s application to overturn the immigration minister’s decision to cancel his visa. He had hoped to remain in the country so that he could compete in the Australian Open, where he is the three-time defending champion. He was set to play his first-round match Monday. Djokovic said in a statement that he will now be “taking some time to rest and to recuperate before making any further comments beyond this.” He said: “I am extremely disappointed with the Court ruling to dismiss my application for judicial review, which means I cannot stay in Australia and participate in the Australian Open. I respect the Court’s ruling and I will cooperate with my departure from the country. I am uncomfortable that the focus of the past weeks has been on me and I hope that we can all now focus on the game and tournament I love. I would like to wish the players, tournament officials, staff, volunteers and fans all the best for the tournament.”
Mizzou lost to Texas A&M on Saturday 67-64. The Tigers will now head to Mississippi tomorrow. Tip off is scheduled for 6PM. The Billikens beat Fordham 63-45 Saturday. They are off until Thursday when they head to UMass. And the 25th ranked Illinois beat Michigan on Friday and take on 7th ranked Purdue today at 11AM.
