Samuel L. Jackson is all emcompassingly in favor of the Oscars introducing a category celebrating popular films. He makes a good point that some go to the movies to be moved and some like superheroes.  “There are people who have had successful careers but nobody can recite one line of their parts. I’m the guy who says shit that’s on a T-shirt.”  He calls it the “most popular movie” category. This year, the 2021 film receiving the most fan votes with the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite by March 3 will be recognized during the telecast, although this will not be considered a formal Oscars category. He says he should have won for Pulp Fiction for supporting actor.  Martin Landau for Ed Wood (LINK)

Because I think they went to middle school together, Michael Douglas will play founding father Benjamin Franklin for an Apple TV Plus limited series. The series will “explore the thrilling story of one of the greatest gambles of Benjamin Franklin’s career when he convinced France to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy.” Douglas will also serve as a producer for the series.

Netflix is losing its Marvel TV series due to expiring licensing contracts, but they will be on Disney Plus. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders will start streaming on Disney Plus on March 16th. They also are adjusting its parental controls in the US to allow more mature content on its platform. Parents will be able to use a pin number to lock out the profiles of younger viewers (LINK)

Kevin Costner the star of Yellowstone, will produce, narrate and host a four-part series for Fox Nation about Yellowstone National Park to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of America’s first national park, with each one-hour episode focusing on the history and wildlife found there.  That’s set for Q4 of this year (LINK)

Sports Report 1

Tonight the Blues are in action in New York as they take on the Rangers.  The team has won 5 in a row.  Puck drop is scheduled for 6:30PM.

NHL player agent Dan Milstein, who represents a majority of the Russian-born players in the league, said his clients are experiencing “disturbing levels” of harassment and believes draft-eligible players are already being discriminated against because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Milstein, who was born in Kyiv immigrated in the United States in 1991 at age 16 as a political refugee. He is now a U.S. citizen and represents more than 75% of the NHL’s Russian- and Belarusian-born players. On Monday, the NHL put out a statement condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The NHL has suspended relationships with business partners in Russia and also paused the NHL’s Russian-language social and digital media sites. The NHL also said it was “concerned about the well being of the players from Russia” — something Milstein said the league has followed through on.

Major League Baseball has canceled Opening Day, with commissioner Rob Manfred announcing yesterday they will scrap regular-season games over a labor dispute for the first time in 27 years after lockout talks collapsed in the hours before management’s deadline. With owners and players unable to agree on a contract to replace the collective bargaining agreement that expired Dec. 1, Manfred canceled the first two series for each of the 30 teams, cutting each club’s schedule from 162 games to likely 156 at most. A total of 91 games were erased. Manfred said the league and union have not made plans for future negotiations and that players won’t be paid for missed games.

Former UFC champion CAIN VELASQUEZ was arrested Monday for ATTEMPTED MURDER. Velasquez reportedly shot and injured a man in South San Jose, California.  And sources say he opened fire because a relative of his was allegedly molested at a home daycare. Here’s the deal:  43-year-old Harry Eugene Goularte was arrested Friday on charges that he molested the child at a daycare run by his mother.  He was granted a supervised release, even though prosecutors opposed it. On Monday afternoon, Velasquez allegedly opened fire at a car containing Goularte, his stepfather, and at least one other person.  The stepfather was hit at least once, but he’s expected to survive. Since the alleged molestation victim is a minor, his or her identity and relationship to Velasquez has not been revealed. Velasquez retired from MMA in 2019.

The New York Liberty were fined $500,000 for chartering flights to away games during the second half of the WNBA season and for other violations of league rules, including an unsanctioned team trip to Napa. The flights were bought by team owners. The owner of the Liberty has publicly campaigned for better travel accommodations for WNBA players. Chartering typically isn’t allowed in the WNBA out of fear it would create a competitive advantage for teams whose owners can afford bankrolling such costly arrangements.  They craziest thing about all of this?  The WNBA actually considered just terminating the team because of their actions.  When the league learned of the violations, they considered possible punishments. This included stripping the team of “every draft pick you have ever seen” to suspending ownership and even “grounds for termination of the franchise.”

The United States Football League was slated to start in April, with FOX Sports fronting a new version of the league. That‘s in doubt, though, after the owners of the original USFL filed a lawsuit Monday against the network concerning the league with the same name, calling it an “unabashed counterfeit.” The lawsuit said the outlet copied the original logo as well as all eight team names and branding without the permission from the original league’s creators. The filed complaint includes claims for trademark infringement, false advertising and false association.
