DMX Earl Simmons, died Friday, a week after he suffered an overdose.  He’d been deprived of oxygen for nearly 30 minutes after the O.D., and his brain function never returned.  By the end of last week, his organs were failing. He released his debut album “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot” in 1998.  The hits included “Get At Me Dog” and “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem”. His third album “And Then There Was X” included one of his most popular tracks, “Party Up (Up in Here)”. His 2003 hit “X Gon’ Give it to Ya” was a popular walk-up song for athletes and sports teams, and was heavily used to promote the 2016 movie “Deadpool”. In addition to his music, X also appeared in several movies, including “Romeo Must Die”, “Exit Wounds”, and “Cradle 2 the Grave”. But his career was also marred by addiction and legal problems.  In 2019 he had seemingly turned his life around, after finishing a 12-month sentence for tax evasion and a stint in rehab. DMX is survived by 15 kids . . . the youngest born in 2016.

On Friday, before his death was announced, Cleopatra Records released a new song called “X Moves”, featuring DMX, bassist Bootsy Collins from Parliament-Funkadelic, Yes guitarist Steve Howe, and Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice. Meanwhile, X’s official label, Def Jam, is being trashed for releasing two new compilations while he was hospitalized.

And this…. a great story from Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine from 2002 when DMX wanted Tom to hear some of his music.  Morello said he climbed into the back DMX’s Navigator while the rapper and producer Rick Rubin sat in the front. Morello added “I’m in the backseat WITH THE BIGGEST ANGRIEST MOST TENSE UN-NEUTERED PITBULL ON THE PLANET. This dog is two inches from my face and hyper tense and snarling waiting for me to make one false move in HIS backseat. So Rick & DMX are happily banging their heads furiously and shouting along to the thundering hip hop beats and I’m in back as still as a mouse not daring to flinch lest I be mauled. Anyway, I’ll certainly never forget that night nor will I forget DMX’s great music and electric live shows.” Also DMX loved watching “The Golden Girls”  according to Gabrielle Union

PRINCE HARRY arrived in the U.K. yesterday, two days after Grandpa Phil died. PRINCE PHILIP passed away on Friday at the age of 99.   MEGHAN MARKLE did NOT make the trip. DON’T CALL OPRAH AND ORDER NEW CHAIRS JUST YET!!! HANG ON THERE PETER BRADY!!  Meghan is expecting her second child, and her doctor advised her against traveling. The funeral is set for next Saturday at 3:00 P.M. local time . . . which is 10:00 A.M. Eastern. Philip married QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND in 1947.  In addition to her, he’s survived by four children, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

As is just announced Justin Timberlake will play “Gong Show” host Chuck Barris in a series for Apple TV+. JANET JACKSON’s Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction” was all JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE’s idea . . . because he wanted to one-up BRITNEY SPEARS. That’s according to stylist Wayne Scot Lukas, who helped Janet get ready for the 2004 halftime show.  He says Justin wanted to upstage Britney, MADONNA, and CHRISTINA AGUILERA, after they’d just made headlines a few months earlier by making out at the “VMAs”. The original idea was for Janet to be wearing a dress, and Justin would step on the back of the dress, pulling it off to reveal Janet wearing nothing but a PEARL G-STRING underneath.  But for whatever reason, they changed the plan and went with the nipple reveal instead. Wayne says, quote, “I wouldn’t call it a wardrobe ‘malfunction’ in a million years.  It was the most functioning wardrobe in history.  As a stylist, it did what it was intended to do.”

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” has been playing the Clinton Street Theater in Portland, Oregon every Saturday night for 43 years . . . and they refused to let the pandemic end the streak. Nathan Williams hosts “Rocky Horror” nights at the theater . . . and when it closed last March due to coronavirus restrictions, he just kept on screening it.  Sometimes with a friend, sometimes ALONE.  For 54 weeks. He says, quote, “I was in a position to keep a flame burning, to keep a torch lit.  I’m just a guy holding a torch for the city of Portland, for all the weirdos, for all the people who don’t have a safe place to call home, we’re home.” When the theater reopened on April 3rd, “Rocky Horror” was the first movie they played.

HBO Max is developing a reality competition show inspired by the movie “Magic Mike”.  It’s called “The Real Magic Mike”, and it’ll feature 10 men who have “lost their magic.” They will, quote, “bare their souls, and more, as they evolve their bodies, learn to perform spectacular routines, and develop a new level of self-confidence.  As they strip . . . they’ll rid themselves of emotional baggage and regain their mojo.” They’re competing for a cash prize and a chance to perform at the “Magic Mike Live” stage show in Las Vegas.  CHANNING TATUM is onboard as a producer, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll appear on-screen.

WILLIE NELSON wrote a letter to President Biden asking him to make the “High Holidays” an official National Holiday.  There’s also a petition at Change.org. If you’re not familiar, Willie and his fellow marijuana advocates consider April 20th through the 29th as the “High Holidays.”  April 20th is the infamous 4/20 . . . and April 29th is Willie’s birthday.  (He’ll be 88.) Now, if you’re already on board with this, then you probably know about Willie’s “first annual cannabis convention.”  It’s a virtual event called Luck Summit: Planting the Seed, and it’s going down April 26th through the 29th.  NATHANIEL RATELIFF is the host and there will be performances, cooking demonstrations, comedy routines, and other weed-related stuff.  They hope to “destigmatize, educate, and promote cannabis culture.” Tickets start at $10, and proceeds will benefit something called the HeadCount Cannabis Voter Project, which is a pro-cannabis organization

The Wallflowers have announced their first new album in nearly a decade coming on July 9th, called Exit Wounds would you like a taste of the  first single “Roots and Wings”. A deluxe vinyl version of Exit Wounds will be autographed by Dylan.  Only 750 copies will be available and they will open for Matchbox Twenty.  The tour kicks of this July in Connecticut and will cross the country before wrapping up October 7th with a show at California’s Hollywood Bowl.  Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com

Well – on Monday last week the Blues fell to the Vegas Golden Knights 6-1.  And it was ugly.  Fast forward to the end of the week where the Blues picked up a HUGE 9-1 win against the Wild.  Then, the very next night, they went into OT where Ryan O’Reilly picked up a beautiful game winner and the team put together three wins in a row for the first time in over a month.  Tonight, the Wild and Blues play up in Minnesota.  Puck drop is scheduled for 7PM.

Yesterday – it was rumored that the Blues were “in the mix” when it came to a trade with Buffalo for Taylor Hall.  With the trade deadline happening today, the Blues were one of the teams many thought could be buying.  And last night it was announced that Taylor Hall was traded to the B….ruins.  Hall earned 2018 league MVP honors while with the New Jersey Devils but has now been traded twice in two years.

The Cardinals struggled this weekend against the Brewers. They lost both games this weekend 9-5 on Saturday and 9-3 yesterday.  Today they kick off a three games series with the Nationals.  John Gant gets the start for the Cardinals today.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:45PM.

Hideki Matsuyama put together two brilliant closing rounds at the Augusta National to win the 2021 Masters. The Japanese golfer finished ahead of Will Zalatoris in second to claim his first major. He shot a final round 73 to finish with a score of 10 under par, one shot ahead of the American runner-up. In winning the tournament, Matsuyama became the first Japanese man to win a golf major and ended an almost four-year winless drought.

Evander Holyfield, the Hall of Fame heavyweight who has been retired since 2011, will return to the ring on June 5 in an eight-round exhibition against Kevin McBride. Holyfield-McBride will appear on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez’s lightweight title defense against George Kambosos. The event will be streamed on Triller. Holyfield had hoped to secure a match against Mike Tyson. Holyfield and Tyson famously fought twice in the 1990s, with the 1997 rematch ending in a disqualification win for Holyfield after Tyson bit off a piece of Holyfield’s ear. McBride, 47, is best known for his 2005 knockout win over Tyson. Holyfield-McBride will be eight, two-minute rounds with no headgear.

Tennessee State is naming Eddie George its new head football coach. George starred at running back for the Tennessee Titans from 1996 to 2003, and the Tigers hope he will bring a much-needed spark to the program. The school is taking a path similar to the one taken by Jackson State, which hired NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders to take over its program in September. Jackson State is 4-3 in Sanders’ first season as coach.

How about this for perfection by North Texas softball pitcher Hope Trautwein: 21 batters faced, 21 strikeouts. Trautwein threw the perfect game Sunday, striking out all 21 Arkansas-Pine Bluff batters she faced in a 3-0 victory. It was the first perfect game in North Texas history and is believed to be the first perfect seven-inning game in NCAA Division I history with every out being a strikeout.

Alex Rodriguez could be swapping the baseball field for hardwood.  A-Rod and businessman Marc Lore are looking to buy the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves.  Reports say the two are in negotiations with the current team owner.  In a statement, Rodriguez and Lore said, “We look forward to entering this phase of the process. We are excited by the prospect of getting to know the Timberwolves organization, the talented team, and their incredible fans.” Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez were previously looking to buy MLB’s New York Mets.

And finally –  NFL owners are expected to approve a proposal that would alter the league’s jersey-number rules in 2021. The rule change, proposed by the Chiefs, would allow running backs, tight ends and wide receivers to wear any number from one to 49 as well as 80–89. Defensive backs and linebackers can also wear numbers 1–49 if the rule change is approved.

The league’s new number ranges would be as follows
:
Quarterback, punter, kicker: 1–19
Running back: 1–49, 80–89
Defensive back: 1–49
Linebacker: 1–59, 90–99
Offensive lineman: 50–79
Defensive lineman: 50–79, 90–99

The Chiefs reportedly ran into a shortage of available numbers in the 20–49 range last season, with Nos. 28, 33, 36 and 37 all retired by the franchise. With the newly expanded jersey ranges, franchises are unlikely to run into a similar issue at any point in the coming seasons. Multiple current NFL stars wore single digits in college, including Odell Beckham Jr., Derrick Henry and Christian McCaffrey.
