The statement came a day after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reportedly called the recent protests by players “a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues.” President Donald Trump interpreted that as a demand that players stop protesting. On Twitter, he wrote: “It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY.”

Pennsylvania’s Albright College dismissed player Gyree Durante from its Division III football program for kneeling during the national anthem at a Saturday game against a rival college team. A school spokesman said the team’s leadership council had agreed that team members would kneel during the coin toss but stand during the national anthem. The player dismissed said QUOTE “I was just taught you fight for what you believe in and you don’t bow to anyone. I believe heavily in this, so I decided to fight for it.”
