#Sports!: Cardinals struck early and often last night; Cleveland Indians won their 20th straight game last night; NFL games will be played as scheduled in Florida this weekend in the wake of Hurricane
The Cardinals struck early and often last night as they put up double digits against the Reds and won by a final score of 13-4. Paul DeJong hit his 22nd homer of the year in the win. Molina had another big night picking up 3 RBI and hitting a double. The Cubs won too last night so no ground was picked up there, and the Cards are now 3.5 games back in the NL Wild Card race. The Cards take on the Reds tonight at Busch for game 2 of the series. Jack Flaherty (Fla-hurtee) gets the start for the Cardinals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15PM
The Cleveland Indians won their 20th straight game last night, beating the Detroit Tigers 2-0 at home to tie the American League record held by the 2002 Oakland A’s. The Major League Baseball record is owned by the 1916 New York Giants, who won 26 games in a row. With their 20-game streak, the Indians join those Giants, the 2002 A’s, and the 1935 Chicago Cubs, who won 21 in a row, as the only teams since 1900 to win 20 straight games.
The Dodgers not only snapped their 10 game losing streak yesterday with a win against the San Francisco Giants, but in the process they also clinched a spot in the playoffs. We mentioned yesterday, the team started off HOT but then quickly fell in the last few months. And, after this crazy losing streak, people were losing hope. However, they just had too good of a first half to screw things up. So far the Dodgers and Nationals are the only two teams that have clinched playoff spots.
The Braves did a good turn by offering those fleeing Hurricane Irma for Atlanta free tickets to any of the four games they played against the Marlins from Thursday through Sunday. That means there were probably some Irma refugees in the stands for last Thursday night’s game. That likely reality makes this song a poor choice for between-innings entertainment … That’s what the Braves played between innings on Thursday night against the Marlins while, of course, Hurricane Irma was bearing down on southern region of Florida. Not surprisingly, it wasn’t hard to find people who were outraged by this, but the Braves owned up to their mistake and Braves official apologized, said “Rock You Like A Hurricane” is on home playlist, should have been pulled. Won’t be played again this series”
The Oakland Athletics have announced that their April 17 home game next season will have free admission for all fans. ESPN reports that the game that day is against the Chicago White Sox and lands on the 50th anniversary of the Athletics playing their first game at Oakland Coliseum. According to the Athletics, the promotion is thought to be one of the first completely free standalone games in major league history. More details about the game will be released in early 2018.
NFL games will be played as scheduled in Florida this weekend in the wake of Hurricane Irma. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have both said they’ll be playing their home games as planned in Florida on Sunday. The Buccaneers’ game last week at the Miami Dolphins was postponed until November because of Irma.
