Man dressed as Santa tries to lure kids from bus stop

A man dressed as Santa Claus tried to lure two elementary school students from their bus stop Thursday, St. Ann Police say.

The man, wearing a fake beard and driving a red pick-up, offered the Kratz Elementary schoolers candy near the intersection of Geraldine Avenue and June Drive. The two kids did not approach the man and ran home to tell adults what happened.
Police say parents should use the scary incident as an opportunity to talk to their kids.

Inform them of stranger danger and if they are approached in situation like this, the best thing is to tell an adult as fast as you can. Do not approach the vehicle and go straight to an adult and tell them what happened,” Lt. Dan Cowsert said.

This is the fourth incident of “stranger danger” in the Ritenour School District this school year.

September 27, 2017, a student from Hoech Middle School was grabbed by a man after the boy refused a ride. The boy was able to escape.

November 1, 2017, a 16-year-old girl was approached by a man while walking home from school around 8 p.m.

November 10, 2017 – A Husky Academy student was approached by a man on her way to school.

Security guards kill knife-wielding man inside Barnes-Jewish complex

Two security guards inside the Center for Advanced Medicine on the Barnes-Jewish campus fatally shot a 46-year-old man who flourished a pair of knives out of his pockets.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said St. Louis Police Lieutenant Colonel Rochelle Jones.

Police said the incident happened on the 14th floor when the male patient armed himself with pocket knives in a public space of the floor. The guards fired several shots, killing him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He refused to put the knives down, so, they had to take action,” said Lt. Colonel Jones. “You have to act within a moment’s notice, it’s all based on what you see. Do you see a knife, a gun? It’s just a few seconds to make a decision that will impact your life.”

The man was with his wife at the time and was a patient at the center. No other information about the man was made available.

“I feel sorry for the family no telling what was going through the gentleman’s mind or what kind of stress he was dealing with,” said Center for Advanced Medicine cancer patient Chris Barnhart.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital, which is adjacent to the Center for Advanced Medicine, was placed on lockdown as a result.

An all-employee alert was sent to hospital staff around 10:40 a.m. Thursday, adding the lockdown was a precaution.
The St. Louis Police Department’s homicide division is investigating the shooting.

Car window shot out during drive-by in Tower Grove East

Neighbors in Tower Grove East hope surveillance video of a drive-by shooting can help catch the people responsible.

The shooting happened Wednesday morning at 9:30 on the 3100 block of Shenandoah.

Ron Schnatzmeyer’s surveillance camera’s caught the whole thing.

“It appears to be just random and someone got their kicks out of destroying property,” said Schnatzmeyer.

The car was a beige colored Ford Taurus. It turned onto Shenandoah from Michigan and fired three shots according to witnesses. One of the shots smashed the back window of a neighbor’s car parked on the street. The shooter’s car didn’t slow down before or after the shots were fired.

“What was going through my mind was ‘oh not again.’ We had an incident a year and a half ago where several cars had windows shot out,” said Schnatzmeyer.

No one was hurt by the gunfire. Anyone with information is urged to call St. Louis Police.

What the new tax withholding tables mean for your take-home pay

The tax overhaul is likely giving your paycheck a boost come February.

So now is a good time to take a second look at your tax withholding at work.

The Treasury released its income tax withholding tables on Thursday, reflecting changes stemming from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. In all, the new legislation has increased the standard deduction, done away with personal exemptions and trimmed individual income tax rates.

This means you could start seeing changes to your paychecks as early as next month.

You should take a look your withholding to make sure you’re deducting the correct amount of taxes under the new legislation.

“You don’t want a big refund, where you’re giving an interest-free loan to the government,” said Melissa Labant, director of tax policy and advocacy at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

“You also don’t want a big balance due,” she said.

Trump Told Senators He Doesn’t Want Any More Immigrants From “Sh*thole” Countries

In a meeting with a group of lawmakers today, President Trump reportedly expressed frustration that the U.S. is taking in too many people from “shithole” countries in Africa and the Americas. The Washington Post reports:

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to African countries and Haiti. He then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries like Norway, whose prime minister he met yesterday.

According to the Post, the remark came after Sens. Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin suggested a potential bipartisan deal that would involve making cuts to the visa lottery program and funding Trump’s long-sought border wall while restoring protections for people from countries that have been removed from the temporary protected status program. (As a side note, Trump has managed to say an impressive number of ridiculous things as a result of a relatively innocuous meeting with the prime minster of Norway yesterday.)

The Trump administration announced Monday that it would be taking away protected status from El Salvador, sparking fears that about 200,000 Salvadorans currently residing in the U.S. would have to leave, on top of the Haitians and Nicaraguans already removed from the program. Others who now benefit from the program include people from Nepal, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The Obama administration decided in 2016 to end protected status for three West African countries affected by the Ebola outbreak.

Trump calling countries where people of color live “sh*thole[s]” in contrast to more desirable European countries of origin would be bad enough on its own, but it’s the second time remarks like these have been reported in the past few weeks. On Dec. 23, 2017, the New York Times reported that in a June 2017 meeting in the Oval Office, an enraged Trump had read off a list of countries whose immigrants had received U.S. visas in 2017, saying that Haitians “all have AIDS” and that once Nigerians had seen America, they would never “go back to their huts” in Africa.

Coming just before Christmas, that story got less attention than it might have otherwise, and the White House denied he had made the comments, blasting the New York Times for its use of anonymous sources. This time, they didn’t even bother with the denial, instead just blaming other politicians for choosing to “fight for foreign countries.”

A Woman Skips Her Mother’s Funeral . . . To Steal Her Safe

Something tells me this woman did NOT have a great relationship with her mom.  Call it a hunch.
A woman named Audra Johnson from Southington, Connecticut died last week.  And her 30-year-old daughter Alyce Davenport skipped her funeral last Friday.
Why?  Because Alyce was breaking into her mom’s house at the time and stealing her safe with $90,000 worth of stuff in it.
When Audra’s fiancé got home after the funeral, he found someone had broken into the house.  So he called the cops.
They quickly figured out Alyce had broken in, and they found her and her 27-year-old boyfriend Diron Conyers staying at a motel.
They were both arrested on theft charges.

Humblebragging Makes You Less Likable Than Just Outright Bragging

Even if you don’t know the term “humblebragging,” you’ve seen people do it.  It’s when someone pretends to complain on social media . . . but really, they’re just trying to camouflage their bragging.
For example, a humblebrag is something like, “I rolled out of bed, went to Starbucks with no makeup and three guys still hit on me.  So annoying.”
Well, a new study out of Harvard found . . . you’re better off just outright bragging.
The researchers had some people read outright brags, like, “People mistake me for a model” . . . and some read humblebrags like, “I’m so bored of people mistaking me for a model.”
Then they had the people rate how much they LIKED the person making the statements . . . and how attractive they think the person is.
And the consensus is . . . someone who just comes right out and brags is MORE likable and more attractive.  The main reason?  At least they come off as more sincere.

Most of Us Take More Than One Selfie Before We Have a Good One to Post . . . and Some People Take More Than 25

Apparently for most of us, taking a selfie to put on Instagram becomes a full-on Sears Portrait Studio photo shoot.  According to a new survey, only 5% of women and 16% of men take just one selfie and then post it.

48% of women and 58% of men take between two and five before they get one worthy of posting.  And about 3% of both men and women take more than 25 to get a good one.

The survey also found half of people take more than three minutes taking pictures and then touching them up and adding filters before they post them.

Mom of H&M ‘Coolest Monkey’ ad model slams critics ‘crying wolf,’ tells them to ‘get over it

The mother of the boy who modeled H&M’s “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” sweatshirt slammed celebrity and social media critics for “crying wolf” and told them to “get over it,” reports said on Thursday.

Terry Mango, who said she was the “mum” of the model in a series of now-deleted Facebook posts, said she doesn’t believe the ad was racially insensitive.
The ad prompted celebrities including The Weeknd and rapper G-Eazy to end their partnerships with the clothing line.

“Am the mum and this is one of hundreds of outfits my son has modelled,” Mango wrote, according to screenshots of the messages. “Stop crying wolf all the time, unnecessary issue here… get over it.”
“If I bought that jumper and put it on him and posted it on my pages, would that make me racist? I get pples opinion, but they are not mine,” she said.

She added, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion about this…I really don’t understand but not coz am choosing not to but because it’s not my way of thinking, sorry.”
The mother said she was at the photo shoot when her son modeled the sweatshirt.

According to her Facebook page, Mango lives in Stockholm, Sweden, but is originally from Nairobi, Kenya. Her page also includes photos of her son posted in December, and when he was a baby.

H&M issued an apology on Monday saying they were “deeply sorry” about the ad and removed it from all its platforms. The sweatshirt was also pulled from store shelves and will be recycled, the company said.

The store also sent a second apology for using a black child to model their “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” sweatshirt on their UK website.

“We agree with all the criticism that this has generated — we have got this wrong and we agree that, even if unintentional, passive or casual racism needs to be eradicated wherever it exists.

“We appreciate the support of those who have seen that our product and promotion were not intended to cause offence but, as a global brand, we have a responsibility to be aware,” wrote H&M in a statement to Fox News.

A Guy Steals a Box of Tampons, But Pays for His Beer

At what age do guys stop being embarrassed by this?  Some guy in northern Arkansas walked into a grocery store the other day, and stole a box of TAMPONS by shoving them down his pants.
He also got beer but he paid for that.  So apparently he had money . . . he was just too embarrassed to buy the tampons?
A security camera got a shot of him, and he looks like he’s in his 20s or early 30s.  Last we heard, the cops were still looking for him.

Ikea Is Running a Magazine Ad That Works as a Pregnancy Test

So this is a thing that exists now.  Ikea just started running an ad for a crib in a women’s magazine in Sweden that’s also a PREGNANCY TEST.
So you can tear out the ad, pee on it, and then it’ll tell you if you’re pregnant.
And if you are, a new, lower price for the crib will appear on the page.  So you can bring in the ad . . . holding it with gloves, maybe . . . and get that discount.  There’s no word if they’re going to run this ad here in America.
