Remember the polarizing artist on the nominees list this year for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Fela Kuti (Kuti, a Nigerian-born multi-instrumentalist who studied music in London, spent a number of years touring around the world, including the U.S., where he picked up influences of funk icons like James Brown and Sly Stone, as well as elements of jazz and soul music, that he incorporated into his traditional West-African background.) Todd Rundgren was very vocal about who is Fela Kuti and who has he influenced in the rock and roll world. And he complained all while keeping those pesky neighbor kids off his new zoysia grass. Don’t tell Todd now but guess who is leading the fan voting currently? This Fela Kuti has about 140,000 fan votes. Second is Tina Turner at about 108,000 votes, and Foo Fighters in third with a little over 80,000 votes. The fan ballot will include the top five vote-getters and is tallied with more than 1,000 official ballots submitted by historians and artists. Todd Rondgren is sitting at about 42,000 votes.

Chris Cornell’s widow Vicky Cornell is suing Soundgarden saying they cant reach a deal on a buyout dollar amount. She says the 3 remaining band members offered her just $300k for Chris’ share … an amount she claims is less than what she got for her cut of just the 2018 royalties for Soundgarden’s masters. She also says the guys got an offer of $16 million for the bands masters which would mean $4 million a piece sooo. That offer put a value on the band, of at least that amount, as far as Vicky’s concerned … which is why she’s offended by their $300k offer, and says she has no choice but to file the suit asking the judge to value the band’s assets. The band says she asked to have the band valued so 4 months ago they submitted a buyout offer based on a respected music industry valuation expert named Gary Cohen. Vicky and Soundgarden have been engaged in a separate legal battle since she sued them in late 2019 over royalties and the rights to 7 unreleased recordings.

The news was delivered Monday in a brief post about Ariel Young, who has been hospitalized since the Feb. 4 crash. Reid, son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, was the team’s outside linebackers coach. He was initially placed on administrative leave immediately following the crash, but he is no longer employed by the team. His contract expired in recent days and was not renewed. The announcement was made in a Twitter post Monday by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Fernando Tatis Jr., the new face of baseball, agreed to a 14-year, $340 million contract extension with the Padres on Wednesday, making it one of the largest guarantees in American sports history. Tatis, 22, will receive the third-biggest deal in baseball history — and do so at a far younger age than Mike Trout and Mookie Betts, both of whom signed their megadeals at 27. Tatis went to San Diego via trade and is now the player around whom the Padres will build a team equipped to win a championship.
A year after playing their home games in Buffalo for the entire 2020 season, the Blue Jays have reportedly found another new home for 2021—at least to start. The Blue Jays will reportedly play their home games at their spring training facility in Florida to begin the 2021 season. The decision happened because of pandemic-related border restrictions in Canada, which have also forced the NBA’s Raptors to relocate for the 2020-21 season. Last year, the Blue Jays played their home games at their minor league affiliate’s stadium in Buffalo. The decision is expected to be announced today. The Blue Jays will begin the season on a six-game road trip before their home opener against the Angels on April 8. The team will continue to play at TD Ballpark through at least a three-game homestand against the Braves that ends on May 2.
Four years ago, TIM TEBOW decided to try to make it as a professional baseball player . . . despite being 29, and not having played competitive baseball since junior high, 11 years before. He was signed by the Mets . . . and he’s spent the past four years hacking his way through their farm system. He made it up to their Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse . . . but now he’s calling the whole thing off. Yesterday, Tebow announced that he’s retiring from baseball. He’s definitely a talented athlete. But it was a long-shot that he could make it to the Big Leagues.
There’s something enticing about placing a bet on a long-shot. Sure, it likely won’t work out, but the possibility of a giant payday is sometimes just too much to turn down. But there’s betting a heavy underdog, and then there’s placing a $10,000 bet on the Washington Wizards to win the NBA championship. The 2021 NBA title, to be exact. The same 2021 season in which the Wizards are 8-17. Their longest winning streak is two games, and they have picked up victories against just two teams above .500. Should the bet hit, the ticket would pay out $5 million in winnings. Considering the Wizards haven’t put together a stretch of four wins in seven games all year, it’s pretty likely that $10,000 ticket is worthless. Washington hasn’t advanced past the second round of the postseason since 1979, either, which makes things a bit trickier.
Once again, Serena Williams came within reach of a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title. And once again, Williams couldn’t quite get it done, as she was defeated by Naomi Osaka in the Australian Open semifinals. Osaka, who also beat Williams in the 2018 US Open final, reached her fourth major title match and stretched her winning streak to 20 matches. Osaka will face 22nd-seeded American Jennifer Brady for the championship on Saturday.
