The estates of Robin Williams and George Carlin, and comics Andrew Dice Clay, Bill Engvall and Ron White, sued Pandora proper licensing. This could change things across streamers. Comedians want the same copyright protection as musicians. Lawyers said Pandora knew what they were doing and just decided to deal with it later and later is now. Pieces of music are covered by two copyrights, sound recording and the underlying written music. Streaming services like Pandora and Spotify pay royalties to the owners of each copyright. But for spoken word recordings, where comics are classified, streaming services only pay for the recording and not the composition itself, the comedy writing. The lawsuit said that Pandora improperly offered 16 of Williams’ works through its streaming service without paying even a “fraction of a penny.” The lawsuit seeks $150,000, the maximum amount in damages, for each infringement of a copyrighted work. This totals to $8.4 million for Carlin’s estate and $4.1 million for Williams’ estate (LINK)
The main medic on the set of “Rust” where Alec Baldwin shot and killed Halyna Hutchins is now suing is everyone. Cherlyn Schaefer filed suit against the movie’s armorer and assistant director plus the production company and others — claiming the defendants’ alleged negligence caused her severe emotional distress in the aftermath of it all. She claims she was the first one to provide medical assistance to Halyna after the shooting, applying pressure to her wounds, giving her oxygen and checking her vitals and calling 911 and ordered a medical helicopter. In the suit, Schaefer claims she’s since suffered “tremendous shock, trauma and severe emotional distress” … and she’s blaming the whole ordeal on the production’s shortcomings with respect to safety issues (LINK). She claims she’s so shaken she’s medically prevented from returning to the profession or any other job. Baldwin is not being sued. She’s also suing the movie’s prop master, Sarah Zachry, claiming Zachry knew or should have known the gun contained live ammo. Zachry’s lawyer, William Waggoner, tells TMZ … Zachry did not load the gun or handle the gun the day of the shooting, and “she did nothing wrong.” Schaefer is asking for unspecified damages.
Simon Leviev — aka the “Tinder Swindler” — is gonna have a hard time finding new victims on dating apps … because he’s been booted from just about everywhere! A rep for Match Group — owners of OkCupid, Hinge, PlentyofFish, OurTime, Meetic, Pairs, and Match say that Simon has been permanently banned from all of their properties … leaving him out of options when it comes to scamming women. The rep says he violated the terms of service at Tinder and therefore the other partner companies will also not allow him to create a profile on the other apps. According to the new documentary, Simon would show off his lavish lifestyle to women on Tinder, in hopes of getting their trust and affection. Once hooking them, he’d convince them to “loan” him money … before he ghosted and made off with their cash. Much like a Ponzi scheme, the documentary claims he’d use one woman’s money to impress the next, and so on. All in all, he allegedly took more than $10 million from his victims. He was eventually arrested in 2019 and sent back to Israel, where he was released after just 5 months in prison. The Match Group rep says he currently doesn’t have a profile on their dating apps under any of his known aliases, but if he tries to create one, he will be removed. Good luck scamming now!
Pixar’s upcoming movie “Turning Red” is about a girl who starts turning into a giant red panda whenever she gets too emotional. It’s a metaphor for puberty. But there’s another scene that’s even more blatant. The first time she starts changing, she hides in her bathroom, and her mother assumes she just got her period for the first time. So she brings her maxi pads and starts giving her advice about how her body is changing. Producer Lindsey Collins says Pixar never pushed back on that scene (LINK)
Green Day is the victim of the Costa Mesa California welcoming committee. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong (LINK) says one of his prized cars and a bunch of band gear were stolen recently. Between Friday night and Saturday morning, the suspects entered a commercial business in Costa Mesa, CA. Cops say the vehicle that was stolen was a white, two-door 1962 Chevrolet Nova. Other than the car, police say the unknown individuals also took two electric guitars and an amp — quite the haul to walk away with. Billie Joe posted the police report number and is asking for help

Major League Baseball has stopped testing players for steroids for the first time in nearly 20 years due to the expiration of the sport’s drug agreement. As of last night, no public announcement was made. The halt in testing is a casualty of the sport’s lockout that started Dec. 2 and a provision in the joint drug agreement between MLB and the players’ association that states “the termination date and time of the program shall be 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 1, 2021.” According to a member of the Anti-doping agency…he says QUOTE: It should be a major concern to all those who value fair play. MLB and the union declined comment on the halt.
If Madden 22‘s simulation is correct, the Cincinnati Bengals are going to win Super Bowl 56, beating the Los Angeles Rams 24-21. The sim also has Bengals QB Joe Burrow as MVP, throwing for 317 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. Rams fans; don’t panic just yet. Madden has gone 3-5 over the past eight years with its Super Bowl predictions.
Some more NFL head coaching spots have been filled. The New Orleans Saints have informed defensive coordinator Dennis Allen that they are hiring him as their next head coach. Allen, 49, will replace his longtime boss, Sean Payton, who stepped away two weeks ago. This will be Allen’s second stint as a head coach after he went 8-28 as coach of the Raiders from 2012 to 2014. The Saints also interviewed former NFL head coaches Brian Flores and Doug Pederson, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and their own special teams coordinator, Darren Rizzi, for the job. The Houston Texans have hired Lovie Smith as their next head coach, the team announced Monday. Smith was the Texans’ associate head coach and defensive coordinator this past season. Smith was previously an NFL head coach with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He joined Culley’s staff after being fired after five seasons as head coach at the University of Illinois.
In a bizarre move, Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has wiped his social media accounts of any trace of his team—and almost everything else, too. Bottom of Form
There are only two posts on Murray’s Instagram account now and he unfollowed the Cardinals. The only two posts remaining on his Instagram are one celebrating his Heisman win with Oklahoma and another featuring him at Sunday’s Pro Bowl. As of Monday, the only activity on his Instagram story is a post from Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans, who captioned a video of him catching a ball from Murray at the Pro Bowl with, “Always wanted to catch a pass from the Texas legend.” Murray’s Twitter account is more of the same. He no longer follows the Cardinals there and his avatar now features two picture—one of him playing football with the Sooners and another of him playing baseball with the Oakland Athletics, who Murray selected him with the No. 9 pick in the 2018 MLB draft. Murray did not sign a contact with the team, however, electing to only play football. The two-time Pro Bowler is under contract with the Cardinals and there have been no reports of him requesting a trade or expressing interest in returning to baseball.
Could LeBron James team up with his son Bronny in the NBA? The rumored interest began circulating last week, and now the NBA world is left to wonder whether a father-son team-up would be with the Lakers or elsewhere. Bronny James is one of the nation’s top high school basketball players for the class of 2023. The earliest that Bronny could currently be able to play in the NBA would be in the fall of ’24, when he is one full year removed from high school. LeBron’s contract expires with the Lakers after the 2022–23 season, which leaves a one-year gap between LeBron’s pending free agency and Bronny’s eligibility in the NBA. It could be complicated for LeBron and Bronny to team up in the NBA before LeBron retires. But it appears as though the idea is an option the James family may explore before the four-time champion calls it a career.
Video surveillance shows New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara punching a man approximately eight times before Kamara’s associates proceeded to stomp on him several more times on the ground in a Las Vegas casino Saturday morning. Kamara was later taken into custody Sunday night AFTER he played in the Pro Bowl. He was interviewed by police and then arrested and charged with battery resulting in substantial bodily harm. The man, who was knocked unconscious, sustained an orbital fracture to his right eye, among other injuries.
Canada earned the top seed in the Beijing Olympics women’s hockey tournament with a 4-2 win over the United States. Canada (4-0) finished atop Group A, while the U.S. (3-1) ended up second. The preliminary round final was only for seeding, as the entirety of their group automatically qualified for the medal round that begins Friday. In this game, the US outshot Canada 53 to 27.
The U.S. didn’t win ANY gold medals in the first four days of the Winter Olympics. So is that a big deal? Well, it’s a slow start, but not historically slow. The record for us is the first NINE days without a gold. It happened in 1936 when our two-man bobsled team finally snagged one. And it was our ONLY gold that year, but there were fewer events back then. More recently, we went seven days without a gold medal in 1988, and four days in 1998. So it’s not THAT weird. In action late last night, U.S. skier Ryan Cochran-Siegle picked up a silver in men’s Super-G. Last we checked, the U.S. had 4 total medals, all silver. Here’s the latest leaderboard we saw as of last night/early this morning.
- Russia: 7. . . 2 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze.
- Canada: 6. . . 1 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze.
- China: 5. . . 3 gold, 2 silver, 0 bronze.
- The Netherlands: 5. . . 2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze.
5. Norway: 5 . . . 2 gold, 0 silver, 3 bronze
