The Hot Amazon Prime Day Item This Year Was Cat Treats

Amazon Prime Day has come and gone.  Did you get anything you’re excited about?  Here’s what everyone else bought . . .

A website called Numerator followed the top Prime Day purchases by tracking tens-of-thousands of customers, and over 100,000 orders.  Here are a few stats on what we bought, and how much we spent . . .

1.  The hottest item this year was apparently . . . Temptations Cat Treats.  (???)  That’s based on the number of units purchased.

The rest of the top five were Amazon Fire sticks . . . Liquid I.V. hydration packets . . . toys from the company Melissa & Doug . . . and beauty products by the brand Laneige.  (luh-NAYGE)

2.  The top product categories were home goods, household essentials, clothes, electronics, and cosmetics.

3.  The average product cost around $30.  Only 5% cost more than $100.

4.  Roughly 60% of people who made a purchase bought more than one thing.  14% bought five items or more.

5.  44% spent at least $100 total.  The average total spend was about $150.

6.  Around 80% of all Prime Day shoppers were women.  So men aren’t as into it.  Also, the older you are, the more likely you were to shop.  24% of Prime Day shoppers were seniors.  That’s higher than any other age group.

7.  Two-thirds of shoppers say they were very satisfied with the deals this year.  But over half still compared prices with other sites before they checked out.

Here’s What to Do When a Red Light Never Turns Green

Have you ever been stuck at a red light that NEVER turns green?  We’re talking about the ones on sensors, not timers like normal.  It’s usually because the sensor doesn’t know you’re there.  And there are a few things you can do that might trigger it.  Here are the two things to try.  Unless the traffic light is just broken, one of them should work . . .

1.  Pull up a little.  That’s the obvious one, but here’s how it works:  Most traffic lights with sensors have wires buried in the pavement called “induction loops,” and you have to be right on top of them.  It’s also possible you pulled up too far.

Look for lines on the ground that are a different color than the pavement, usually darker.  There might be a box outline from where they buried the cables.

2.  Flash your high beams.  Some traffic signals have cameras or infrared sensors instead, and flashing your high beams can sometimes trigger those.

Look for something near the traffic light that looks like the type of security camera you’d see in a bank or a store.  Or sometimes they’re hanging in metal boxes above the roadway.

Wanna Live in an Old Nuclear Missile Silo? Now’s Your Chance

Unique homes are trendy, and this definitely fits the bill.  Only downside:  You have to live underground in middle-of-nowhere, Nebraska.  (???)

Last year, a YouTuber named Andrew Flair bought an old NUCLEAR MISSILE SILO about 50 miles outside Lincoln.

His plan was to flip it, and now he’s done renovating.  He paid $550,000 for it last year, and recently put it on the market for $750,000.

That’s a lot to live in small-town, Nebraska.  But he’s advertising it as “an opportunity to own a piece of Cold War history.”

Also, it was built by the Army Corps of Engineers to withstand a nuke attack.  So there’s a prepper angle.

Re/Max is handling the sale and says several potential buyers have already reached out.  Here’s what they’ll get . . .

It’s got just over 1,250 square feet of living space, so it’s not huge.  But there’s also an unfinished lower level that’s the same size.  He says it has “endless possibilities.”  (Here’s the layout.)

The entire living space is actually in the old control room where they would have launched the missile.  But you can get to the silo itself through a tunnel.

The bottom of the silo is filled with water.  It looks like he put a little raft in there to paddle around in, so that sounds fun.  (???)

There’s only one bedroom, and one bathroom.  It’s a three-quarter bath.  So a toilet, sink, and shower, but no tub.

It comes furnished with an oven, refrigerator, and microwave.  He also added some amenities, like a foosball table, popcorn machine . . . and a big wall to hang all your GUNS.  (For the zombie apocalypse, I guess.)

There’s also a projector with a big screen.  And you’ll have Wi-Fi if you set up a Starlink satellite dish outside.

It comes with just over six acres of land.  From ground level, you’d barely know it’s there except for a concrete entryway.  The address is “1200 Silo Lane.”

Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett will release a new solo album titled Lost at Sea on October 20th. Check out a video for the single “Damage Control” on YouTube.

David Lee Roth has his dancing shoes on again in a new video. This time he’s grooving to Jamiroquai’s “Canned Heat,” which was featured in the 2004 movie Napoleon Dynamite, a fact not lost on Dave who captioned the video “Vote for Pedro,” which is a line from the movie.

Henderson Brewing, the Toronto company that brews Rush‘s beers, is holding a “Rush Day” on August 26th. Fans that reserve the free tickets ahead of the event through the Henderson website will also have exclusive access to purchase a limited edition Rush Day Growler. Also, if you travel to Toronto, at Pearson International Airport, which boasts the initials YYZ, Henderson Brewery will open a taproom in Terminal One later this year, and it will display numerous Rush artifacts from throughout their career.

EA is developing what it calls “an original, third-person, single-player ‘Black Panther’ game” in partnership with Marvel Games and Cliffhanger Games. Cliffhanger Games’ Kevin Stephens said in a statement “We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic ‘Black Panther’ experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game. Wakanda is a rich superhero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.”

AND FINALLY

The Emmy nominees were announced yesterday, and as usual, HBO had the most, with 127.

More than half of those . . . 74 to be exact . . . came from just three shows:

  • “Succession” got the most nominations of any show, with 27.
  • followed by “The Last of Us” with 24
  • “The White Lotus” with 23.

All three of those shows are up for Best Drama, along with “Andor”“Better Call Saul”“The Crown”“House of the Dragon”, and “Yellowjackets”.

The Best Comedy nominees are “Abbott Elementary”“Barry”“The Bear”“Jury Duty”“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”“Only Murders in the Building”“Ted Lasso”, and “Wednesday”.

The Emmys normally air in September, but that’s probably not happening due to the Writers Guild strike.  So we could be looking at November or even January.

St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced yesterday the team has signed forward Oskar Sundqvist to a one-year, one-way contract worth $775,000.

Sundqvist, who is 29, returns to the Blues after a five-year stint with the team from 2017-2022.  During his tenure he collected 83 points (35 goals, 48 assists) and 90 penalty minutes in 242 regular-season games.  He also appeared in 34 postseason games with the team, including 2019 when he posted 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 25 games to help the Blues capture the Stanley Cup.  Last season, Sundqvist split time between the Detroit Red Wings and Minnesota Wild, tallying 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 67 regular-season games overall.  Across eight career NHL seasons, he has accumulated 123 points (50 goals, 73 assists) and 141 penalty minutes in 355 regular-season games.  Sundqvist also won the 2016 Stanley Cup as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

NFL fans will get an inside look at the most intriguing training camp ahead of the 2023 NFL season with the New York Jets, who have been chosen as this year’s team to be featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks.

Adam Schefter broke the news, but as of writing, it’s not yet official.

“NFL and NFL Films have selected the New York Jets to serve as this year’s team on Hard Knocks, per sources. Jets report to training camp one week from today, July 19, and the cameras will be rolling in full force,” he tweeted on Wednesday.

HBO had no comment. No premiere date or viewing schedule has been set.

The Jets have been one of the most talked about teams with their off-season trade for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The move brought the Jets from prime-time irrelevance to six games under the bright lights in 2023, with even more media exposure.

St. Louis CITY SC’s three-match winning streak was snapped on Wednesday night after falling 3-0 to LAFC. LAFC’s Carlos Vela opened it up in the 77th minute and two more followed that goal by the end of the second half. City SC is still in first place in the Western Conference, but the standings are much tighter. City SC is on top with 38 points, while LAFC closed to within two at 36 and Seattle lost to stay three points back at 35.

The U.S. Men’s National Team fell to Panama 5-4 on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup Semifinals. After playing 120 minutes only three days ago, the U.S. team went the distance again and faced back-to-back penalty shootouts for the first time in team history. The result ends the USMNT’s run at this year’s confederation championship as forward Jesús Ferreria netted his tournament-leading seventh goal in front of a crowd of 31,690 at Snapdragon Stadium.

It was the USA’s 12th Gold Cup meeting with Panama- its most-frequent opponent at the competition- and only the second time the Central American side has bested the USMNT in the tournament. Panama will face the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal — Mexico — in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup Final at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 16. Panama reaches the final for the third time after losing to the U.S. in 2005 and 2013. The U.S., a seven-time winner of the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean, failed to reach the final for the first time since losing to Jamaica in a 2015 semifinal.

The 2023 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday was eventful, headlined by a transcendent talent and ending on a sweet note. Its ratings were not so sweet.

This season’s Midsummer Classic averaged a record-low 3.9 rating and 7.01 million viewers, down 7% from last year’s record-lows of 4.21 and 7.51 million. The MLB All-Star Game has now set a record-low in ratings with five of the past seven games (2016, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023).
