Candyman brought in $22.4 million in its opening weekend. Free Guy, Paw Patrol: The Movie, Jungle Cruise, and Don’t Breathe 2 rounded out the top 5 films.
If you have seen a movie trailer you have probably been trailerized. Here is the trailer to Candyman that has trailerizing in it. Trailerizing is when movie trailers use slowed-down versions of popular songs. Like “Say My Name” in the trailer for the new “Candyman” and they do it to get you to pay attention to the trailer. An exec at Sony Music explains that you change every aspect of the song except the lyrics. Quote, “Maybe [people aren’t] paying as much attention to the trailer, and they start to hear the chorus of the song, and they go, ‘Wait, I know this song.’ “They start paying attention, and now they’re watching the trailer. Just one of the many insidious ways that THE MAN messes with your brain and controls you (LINK)
Iron Butterfly drummer Ron Bushy died Sunday at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles after a long battle with esophageal cancer. He was 79-years-old. The band wrote that Bushy was surrounded by his wife and three daughters before he passed. Bushy was the only member of Iron Butterfly to appear on all six of the band’s albums and is famous for that iconic drum solo in the 1968 seventeen-minute psychedelic classic “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”
ED ASNER from “Lou Grant” and Pixar’s “Up” died yesterday of natural causes. He was 91 years old. Asner played newsroom boss Lou Grant on the classic sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” from ‘70 to ‘77. And the same character in the DRAMA “Lou Grant” from ‘77 to ‘82. Won three Emmys for “Mary Tyler Moore” and two more for “Lou Grant”, one of only two actors to win a comedy and drama Emmy for playing the same role. The other is Uzo Aduba, for playing “Crazy Eyes” on “Orange Is the New Black”. Asner is probably best known these days as the voice of Carl Fredricksen, the old widower in Pixar’s “Up”. He was doing the voice again for the upcoming Disney+ series “Dug Days”. Asner also played Santa in “Elf” and Johnny’s stepfather Sid on “Cobra Kai”. This montage contains “Up”, “Elf”, “Roots”, “Cobra Kai”, and “Curb Your Enthusiasm”. The speakers are “Robert Conrad”, “Gavin MacLeod”, and his ex-wife Cindy Gilmore (LINK)

The newest “Mission: Impossible” is Tom Cruise’s seventh time with the franchise. Like Bond he drives a sweet car. It’s a 2021 BMW X7 it has a 4.4-liter turbo V8 engine packing 523 horsepower. Who wouldn’t want it? Especially for free? It was stolen while parked in a NOT secure NOT barricaded lot. This isn’t his movie car it’s the car he has been driven around in since filiming started in the UK. The car was recovered a short time later. He had $1000.00’s of dollars worth of stuff in there like luggage and what not. PLUS,… The people who took the car apparently used a scanner to capture and clone the signal from the keyless car’s ignition fob — and then trick the car into thinking the key was within range (LINK)
This is new to me but… Ghostbusters had a feature built into their suits in case they PEED THEIR PANTS. Did you ever notice the YELLOW TUBES the guys have coming out of their pants? Well, in a 2015 book called “Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Visual History”, DAN AYKROYD explained their purpose. He said they were for, quote, “incontinence due to fear.” In other words, when you get scared by ghosts, sometimes you wet yourself. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is out November 11th (LINK)
Last year CAROLE BASKIN assumed ownership of JOE EXOTIC’s zoo in Oklahoma as part of a legal settlement. And she has officially dismantled it. She sold it to a couple last June for $140K, but it came with a few stipulations. First off . . . the property CANNOT be used as a zoo or to house exotic animals for 100 years. And secondly, the owners cannot name any business on the property after “Tiger King”, its former name the G.W. Zoo, Joe’s name, or even the words “tiger” or “big cat”. Carole’s husband said, quote, “If it became an RV park or storage unit . . . We don’t want it named the Tiger King RV Park. We would like the 20 years of mistreatment of animals there to be forgotten and be history.” (LINK)
NANDI BUSHELL, that little girl who got into virtual drum battles with DAVE GROHL, actually got to perform onstage with the FOO FIGHTERS. They do Everlong.
KANYE WEST’s “Donda” listening party at Soldier Field in Chicago last week was definitely an attention-getter. For starters, KIM KARDASHIAN came out in a wedding gown during the final song, “No Child Left Behind”. Kanye is reportedly telling people they’re back together, but sources say Kim just did it to support (LINK) his career. But he caused even more controversy by bringing (LINK) MARILYN MANSON and DABABY onstage. They were there because they’re on a song called “Jail Part 2” . . . but obviously, they’ve had their issues lately. DaBaby made some anti-gay remarks during a recent show, and Manson is being sued for sexual, physical, and emotional abuse by just about every woman he’s ever known. Kanye ended the night by setting himself on fire (LINK). Not for real, obviously . . . it was just a stunt. By the way . . . “Donda” FINALLY hit streaming platforms yesterday . . . but Kanye didn’t want it to. He Tweeted (LINK) that Universal released it without his permission. He also complained that “Jail Part 2” wasn’t included. But if you look it up, it’s there now.

Metallica is going to lead a “master class” in guitar instruction through the virtual music instruction app Yousician early next year. It sounds like another potential goldmine for Metallica, with Yousician giving the band an upfront fee, licensing royalties and a share of any revenue they bring in. Until then, Metallica’s remastered and expanded black album and their massive charity tribute album, The Metallica Blacklist, both drop on September 10th. If you want to learn more about Metallica’s guitar class, check out the details at Yousician.com

That’s the season that will see the return of “Karate Kid III” baddie, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). In “Karate Kid III,” Silver is introduced as the man who started the “Cobra Kai” dojo with John Kreese (Martin Kove). Tito Jackson says there is a plan for more music from Michael. This one has a twist though. First of all Sony has the rites. Tito said the Jackson family has plans to record a new studio album, their first since 1989, and that they hope to record a new track featuring previously unknown material from Micheal who died in 2009. “It’s beyond our control but they always try and get our participation and we’re always happy to offer (LINK)”

The ESPN family of networks were jam-packed with high school football this weekend, the first of the 2021 campaign and the first real season in two years. The weekend was concluded Sunday with the grand finale — the Hall of Fame Classic at Canton’s Hall of Fame Stadium, pitting defending national champion IMG Academy against…. a high school that doesn’t really exist? ESPN seemed just as confused as the rest of us. For starters, Bishop Sycamore, claiming to be from Columbus, Ohio, went 0-6 last season, the program’s second in existence. IMG pummeled Sycamore by a score of 56-6. But nevertheless, Sycamore got in Sunday’s showcase game because, according to ESPN, the school acquired a number of FBS prospects to its roster. Except, that turned out not to be true. Another school …Sto-Rox of McKees Rocks, Pa….. defeated Bishop Sycamore 19-7 on Friday. After losing in Pennsylvania on Friday, Bishop Sycamore was drilled 58-0 on Sunday.
YouTube star-turned-boxer Jake Paul defeated former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley by split decision, his third win in nine months to improve his overall record to 4–0. Woodley last competed in a mixed martial arts event in March and Sunday night marked his first-ever professional boxing bout. Per the fight stats from Showtime, Paul connected on a higher percent power punches 41% to 36%, though Woodley landed slightly more over the course of eight rounds. Paul did most of his damage on body shots, landing 22 of them compared to Woodley’s eight. Woodley, for his part, asserted that he was the true winner of the fight and demanded a rematch for a future date, calling the judges’s decision “laughable.”
Clutch down the stretch and for six dynamic playoff holes, Patrick Cantlay put a end to an epic battle with Bryson DeChambeau by making an 18-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the BMW Championship on Sunday. DeChambeau missed a 6-foot putt for 59 on Friday and missed four birdie putts to win in regulation and in the playoff Sunday. And then he missed the most important putt of the week from just inside 10 feet to extend the playoff. It cost him a victory. Cantlay made putts from 8 feet for par, 8 feet for bogey and 20 feet for birdie on the final three holes of regulation for a 6-under 66. The last one gave him the victory, his PGA Tour-leading third of the season.
For the first time in 62 years, the Little League World Series championship is heading to the Great Lakes State. Michigan’s Taylor North Little League topped the Hamilton West Side Little League team from Ohio in Sunday’s championship game, 5–2, to capture the Little League World Series title. The two sides battled to the final pitch, with Ohio loading the bases with two outs and the go-ahead run at the plate in the top of the sixth inning. But, the pitcher got Ohio to fly out to center field to end the game.
The NFL preseason is officially done. If you missed it, sorry. But last night, the Jaguars beat the Cowboys. And that was after the Jags sent their backup QB, Gardner Minshew II to the Eagles. They got a 2nd round pick for him. Trading Minshew was the worst kept secret of the draft. Also of note: the Patriots still haven’t announced their starting QB, as well as the 49ers. And…if you are doing a draft soon, avoid TY Hilton. He tore his ACL and he’s pretty much done for most of if not all of the year.
Juan Encarnacion, a former MLB player from the Dominican Republic, allegedly sexually assaulted his daughter, a minor, in May. The prosecution alleges that the 45-year-old entered his daughter’s room while she was asleep and took advantage of her, committing sexual assault. Due to the nature of the accusation, he is not allowed to be released on bail. Encarnacion played 11 seasons in the majors from 1997-2007 for the Tigers, Reds, Marlins, Dodgers and Cardinals.
