Johnny Depp did appear at the “MTV Video Music Awards” last night . . . but it may have done more to harm his career than help.  Johnny showed up twice . . . with his face superimposed inside the helmet of a CGI Moonman floating over the crowd. The first time he said, quote, “I needed the work.” The second time, he said, quote, “I just want you guys to know that I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes . . . any old thing you need.” And that was it.  Seriously.  The floating Moonman did appear over the crowd several more times throughout the show, and you kept kinda thinking Johnny would reappear, and maybe do something to redeem the bit.  But it never happened. A much cooler surprise appearance was Cheech & Chong showing up to present the Red Hot Chili Peppers with the Global Icon Award.

Here are some other highlights from the show….Snoop Dogg smoked a joint so massive, it launched him and Eminem into a virtual dimension for their performance of “From the D 2 the LBC”.  Lizzo won the Video for Good award, and had a message for her haters.  She said, quote, “[B-word], I’m winning!”

The rumors were true.  Elton John and Britney Spears were working on a song together.  They released it last week.  It’s called “Hold Me Closer“.  (The video is only animation, not them together. (AUDIO) This song is mainly the hook of Elton’s “Tiny Dancer“, AND that was released 50 years ago!  Back then, that single only made it to #41 on the Billboard Top 100.  He wasn’t making the so-called “hits” yet.  What is old, is new again.

Speaking of Britney…she  doesn’t want to get paid for a tell-all interview after the end of her conservatorship. She’s telling the story on her own. Britney recently deactivated her Instagram account and moved over to Twitter.  On Sunday out of nowhere, she tweeted a link to an unfiltered, 22-minute video of her experience being put under a conservatorship by her family. She starts talking about how she thinks her family all wanted her to always be the bad guy…((audio)) She noted that while she’s had “tons of opportunities” to do interviews with big names such as Oprah, she felt it was “silly” to get paid to tell her story.  She went on to say how she would love to spit in the faces of those that took advantage of her.  ((audio)) She goes on to describe what it was like working under the conservatorship, and it sounds miserable. Britney says she felt like a robot who was under the direct control of her father.  And the end of the video she gives some advice to those who feel trapped or controlled ((audio))

HBO Max announced four new holiday movies, including a sequel to the beloved 1983 holiday classic, A Christmas Story. The iconic movie will hit the streamer on November 17th. Titled, A Christmas Story Christmas brings back Peter Billingsley, now 51, as an all-grown-up Ralphie Parker.  Several actors from the 1983 movie will be in the sequel, including Scott Schwartz and R.D. Robb as Ralphie’s childhood pals Flick and Schwartz, and Ian Petrella as his younger brother Randy. Also returning: Zack Ward as Officer Scut Farkas. The movie follows a grown-up Ralphie as he returns to his house on Cleveland street “to give his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had as a child,” leading him to reconnect with old friends and reconcile with the passing of his father.

Some abusive jerk got kicked out of the Zac Brown Band concert in Camden, New Jersey on Friday . . . by Zac Brown.  There was some fighting in front of the stage, so he stopped the show to address it. Hetold the guys to “squash it” or he’d have them thrown out.  Quote, “Y’all need to settle down.  Take a deep breath.  I need security to keep an eye on this, right here.  Come on fellas, shake it off.”  A fan posted video of that exchange. But it got worse.  The band was performing “Chicken Fried” when Zac saw one of the guys “screaming in the face” of a little girl and a woman next to her, and that sent him over the top, so he stopped the show again. ((AUDIO))  After the guy was removed, the band continued.

Big news for Morgan Wallen!  Dangerous: The Double Album now ties Adele’s 21 as the longest-running top 10 album on the Billboard 200 in the Nielsen era (84 weeks each). The record is 84 weeks, which Adele’s 21 set in 2015.  Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous has spent 63 weeks in the Top 5 and 10 weeks at #1. It has also been the #1 Country album for 71 non-consecutive weeks, breaking the 50-week record previously held by Luke Combs’ This One’s for You and Shania Twain’s Come on Over.

Jennifer Lopez treated her new husband Ben Affleck to a special performance on their wedding day. The new bride debuted a new song for Ben following the ceremony. A video leaked and it showed Jennifer grabbing the mic as she serenaded him. It’s not known what the title of the track is, but the lyrics prove she “can’t get enough” of her hubby. However, she isn’t too happy after learning that the private footage had been leaked to the public. Jennifer commented on a fan post that shared the clip on Instagram. “This was taken without permission. Period. Whoever did it took advantage of our private moment.”

In an effort to put some cheeks in the seats, the National Association of Cinema Owners has declared Sunday, September 3rd as National Cinema Day with deep discounts at over 3,000 theatres. Major chains like AMC and Regal Cinemas will offer $3 for every showing in every format that day. Major movie studios will also offer sizzle reels on September 3rd before each movie.

A random list of the 50 worst rappers of all time got attention over the weekend.  His top five were Silkk The Shocker at number one, followed by Lil Yachty, Master P, OJ Da Juiceman, and Lil Flip. Diddy, Cardi B, Soulja Boy, Bow Wow, Birdman, Waka Flocka, Nick Cannon, French Montana, RZA, Eazy-E, Young Thug, and Gucci Mane were also on the list.  The tweet said, “50 worst rappers of all time, no easy target. ALL opinions are welcome.” (LINK)

Sometimes a movie role seems like a good idea at the time, but ages very poorly.  Here’s a list of offensive parts actors should not have taken.:

  1. C. Thomas Howellas Mark in “Soul Man” (1986):  This movie was meant to be antiracist, but he we wears Blackface.
  1. Gwyneth Paltrowas Rosemary in “Shallow Hal” (2001):  The movie was supposed to have an “it’s what’s inside that counts” message.  But Gwyneth in a fat suit playing an obese woman kind of had the opposite effect.
  1.  Hilary Duffas Sharon Tatein “The Haunting of Sharon Tate” (2019):  Reimagining Sharon’s murder was in bad taste because her family is still alive and did not approve of it.
  1. Jake Gyllenhaalas Prince Dastan in “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” (2010):  Jake was cast as an Iranian character.
  1. Eddie Murphyas Norbit, Rasputia, and Mr. Wong in “Norbit” (2007):  The movie had racist, anti-fat, and misogynistic stereotypes.  Eddie was in drag and a fat suit for Rasputia and in “Yellowface” for Mr. Wong.
  1. Sam Claflinas Will in “Me Before You” (2016):  Sam played a disabled character who is confined to a wheelchair.  Also, the ending conveyed the message that they only way he could be happy was to DIE.
  1. Eddie Redmayneas Lili in “The Danish Girl” (2015):  Eddie said he regrets taking the role because he isn’t transgender.
  1. Mickey Rooneyas Mr. Yunioshi in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1961):  Mickey wore Yellowface and depicted a racist caricature of an Asian man.
  1. Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One in “Doctor Strange”(2016):  Her character was a Tibetan man in the comics.  She was cast to avoid the Asian stereotype of an old and wise Asian man, but it backfired.
  1. Rooney Maraas Tiger Lily in “Pan” (2015):  Rooney played a Native American character.  She later regretted taking the role.

Way to go, America…This is why we can’t have nice things.  Thanks to all our bickering, we’ve lost Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne!  They previously announced that they’re moving back to the U.K., and in a new interview, they explained why. Sharon said, quote, “America has changed so drastically.  It isn’t the United States of America at all.  Nothing’s united about it.  It’s a very weird place to live right now.” Ozzy added, quote, “Everything’s [effing] ridiculous there.  I’m fed up with people getting killed every day.  God knows how many people have been shot in school shootings . . . It’s [effing] crazy.” Ozzy also seems to be confronting his mortality.  He says, quote, “I don’t want to die in America.  I don’t want to be buried in [effing] Forest Law [cemetery].  I’m English.  I want to be back.”

“House of the Dragon” just premiered last Sunday, and HBO has already renewed it for a second season.  Which isn’t surprising . . . given what a SMASH the premiere was. Around 10 million viewers watched it when it first aired . . . and within a few days, that number grew to 20 million. There are at least seven other live-action and animated “Game of Thrones”-related projects in development.  The success of “House of the Dragon” could speed up the progress on some or all of those.

A British couple got married over the weekend.  And they just happened to hold their reception at a hotel Keanu Reeves was staying at. Obviously they didn’t know that, until James ran into Keanu at the bar.  He invited Keanu to the reception, and he said MAYBE. An hour later, he DID show, even though he was tired from a long flight.  Nikki said, quote, “He was kind enough to do some pictures and our wedding photographer was able to capture some too! Then he took the time to speak to some of our guests and have more photos done!”

An online voiceover marketplace called Voices.com (LINK) surveyed over 1,000 people to find out which animated character has the most recognizable voice.  Surprisingly, it was neither Mickey Mouse nor Bugs Bunny.  Here are the Top 10 results, including the percentage of the audience that recognized the character:

  1. Yogi Bear,  55%
  2. Bugs Bunny,  54%
  3. Homer Simpson,  53%

Tyler O’Neill had a walk off..walk to win on Saturday ( check out this excitement) as the Cards won 6-5 against Atlanta and then yesterday Tommy Edman’s hit a 425-foot leadoff homer that tied the game in the eighth, where, you guessed it, Tyler O’Neill smacked a 97 mph fastball and made it fly 423 feet into the center-field greenery for another 3. (Here’s what that sounded like) That gave the Cardinals a 6-3 victory and their second comeback win in two nights against the defending World Series champions. Cards play again tonight against the Reds in Cincinnati with a start time of 540.

The record for the most expensive collectible card ever sold just got SHATTERED.

The new champ is a 1952 mint condition Mickey Mantle card that just sold for $12.6 MILLION.

That wipes out the previous record of $7.25 million paid for a 1909 Honus Wagner card earlier this month.

The guy who sold the card bought it in 1991, for $40,000 . . . so he made a profit of $12.56 million.

Roberto Clemente (LINK) rookie card — one of the greatest outfielders in MLB history — is hitting the auction block next month … and is expected to sell for over $1,000,000!! Clemente’s 1955 Topps rookie card — recently graded a PSA 9, indicating “mint” condition — will go up for auction in September at PWCC Marketplace and could rival the previous record for a Clemente card, $1.107 million. PWCC officials tell us the ’55 Clemente rookie card is in the “upper echelon of quality for vintage trading cards.” The card’s front features two images of Clemente in his Pittsburgh Pirates uniform and baseball cap, and the back has stats from when Roberto played in the minor leagues. “There are just so few copies of this card in this quality in existence that they require the highest level of custodianship possible,” said PWCC exec Jesse Craig. “We’re talking about a museum-quality piece here.” During his rookie season, Clemente played 124 games for the Pirates, tallying 121 hits, 23 doubles, and a .255 batting average. A 12-time Gold Glove winner and 15-time All-Star, Clemente finished his career with four batting titles, 2 World Series rings and a World Series MVP award. Clemente was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers  quarterback Tom Brady appeared in his first preseason game of the summer on Saturday. Tom was 6-for-8 with 44 passing yards as the team lost to the Indianapolis Colts 27-10. Of course, everyone wanted to know where he disappeared to. “It’s all personal. You know everyone’s got different situations they’re dealing with so we all have very unique challenges to our life,” he said.  “I’m 45 years old, man, there’s a lot of s— going on. Just gotta figure out life the best you can. It’s a continuous process.” Brady looked great and kinda said the obvious after the game. “I feel good. I’ve played football for a long time. I’m pretty good at it,” Brady said. “Doesn’t take me long for me to remember how to play it.” Brady did not get specific about the 11-day absence.  He denied that he was a part of “The Masked Singer” (which was a rumor). Another report suggested he was spending time with his family in a tropical location. He also expressed his gratitude toward the Bucs for accommodating him through whatever he was dealing with. “Since I’ve come to this organization, it’s been an amazing experience for me to come to this place and be this supported over a long period of time,” he said. “I’m ready to go,” he added. Either way, the quest for an eighth Super Bowl title begins on Sept. 11th. Speaking of Brady, For the 4th time since 2011, he was chosen by his peers as the No. 1 player in the #NFLTop100 (LINK).

The majority of the field at the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway wiped out in a huge crash Sunday that seemingly could’ve been avoided.

The race was originally scheduled to happen Saturday evening, but was delayed due to wet weather. When rain arrived again Sunday, NASCAR was slow to react with a caution flag. Instead, the field drove into a wet Turn 1 and both of the leaders, Denny Hamlin (LINK) and Daniel Suárez, spun and collected most of the cars behind them in a massive wreck. Check out the audio.

Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. is stable after he was shot multiple times during a possible attempted carjacking or robbery on Sunday. Robinson was shot twice just before 6 p.m. in Washington, D.C., and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. According to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero (LINK), Robinson was shot in his lower body. The former Alabama standout was selected by Washington in the third round of the draft in April. He racked up a career-high 1,343 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns last season with the Crimson Tide while helping them reach the national title game (LINK)

Rory McIlroy has been the loudest voice off the course this year in support of the PGA Tour as other golfers defected for the LIV Golf startup. On Sunday, he delivered on the course with a 66 for a comeback win to capture the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup title, which carries an $18 million payout. It was the third FedEx crown for McIlroy since the playoff launched in 2007—Tiger Woods is the only other golfer with two wins. The $18 million prize, up from $15 million last year, pushed his earnings for the 2021-22 golf season to a measly $26.7 million, a record one-year tally for any player (LINK)
