Actor Eddie Mekka, a regular on the 1970s and ’80s sitcom Laverne & Shirley and a Tony Award nominee, has died Saturday at his home in  California  He was 69 years old; a cause of death wasn’t given. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts he landed the role of Carmine “The Big Ragoo” Ragusa, Shirley’s (Cindy Williams) boyfriend, on Laverne & Shirley in 1976 and remained with the series throughout its eight-season run on ABC. He worked with  Penny Marshall, in a brief role in A League of Their Own as a guy Mae (Madonna) dances with at a bar. Mekka had a role in the 2006 feature Dreamgirls and made appearances on a number of TV series, including 24, ER, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and daytime dramas The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful (LINK)

ALEC BALDWIN’s ABC interview aired last night, and Alec explained how the gun supposedly went off and killed HALYNA HUTCHINS, even though he supposedly didn’t pull the trigger. He went on to say he didn’t even know what happened for quite a while (LINK)

SETH ROGEN was in the front row of ADELE’s recent “One Night Only” concert special on CBS.  The thing is, he didn’t know they were filming a special, so he and his wife got SUPER-HIGH before the show. Here is a probably still high Seth talking about it on Fallon.

DEMI LOVATO is no longer “California sober”.  This was a term Demi used to say that despite being a recovering addict, they’d still smoke weed in moderation . . . while avoiding alcohol entirely. Yesterday though, they said, quote, “I no longer support my ‘California sober’ ways . . . Sober sober is the only way to be.” Demi didn’t say what inspired the change.  It’s possible it could be in light of recently celebrating their late friend, who passed away from a drug overdose a few years ago (LINK)

TAYLOR SWIFT’s 10-minute version of “All Too Well” recently became the longest song to hit #1 on the Hot 100 . . . replacing “American Pie” by DON MCLEAN.  So she sent Don flowers and a note.

Love “Golden Girls”?  Well there’s going to be a first-ever fan gathering called “Golden Con: Thank You for Being a Fan” next year.  It’ll take place in Chicago during the weekend of April 22nd.  Organizers are “working diligently” to get the last Golden Girl standing, BETTY WHITE, to appear in some capacity.  She’ll be 100 by the time convention rolls around, and she hasn’t been seen publicly in a while, so it’s hard to believe she’d show up in person. But there will be, quote, “guest stars, producers, and others directly connected with the show” . . . plus a lineup of activities like a “Greatest Gift” vendor market, photo-ops, live parody shows, and a costume parade.  Tickets will go on sale at the beginning of the year at ThankYouForBeingAFan.com.

Dave Grohl and Greg Kursten are celebrating the holidays with the return of their Hannukah Sessions, celebrating iconic Jewish musical acts during the festival of lights.  Grohl’s daughter, Violet, joins her dad once again to pay tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, singing “Take The Box”.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, JAWS, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, READY PLAYER ONE, WAR OF THE WORLDS, E.T THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL, JURASSIC PARK…West Side Story is Steven Spielberg’s first musical (LINK).  So what movie genre has he not yet done.  “I was asked that question over the last 40 years of my career, if not longer, and I always say ‘A musical is the one thing I haven’t done.’ The thing I neglected to say is the one genre I haven’t really tackled yet is the Western,” he told Yahoo! Entertainment. “So who knows? Maybe I’ll be putting on spurs someday. Who knows?” Spielberg has made loads of movies with horses (the dinosaurs of the wild west, I always say), but the closest he’s come to making a Western is producing Cowboys & Aliens

Here is a list of Christmas movies . . . but are they REALLY “Christmas” movies?  Let’s debate (LINK)  Here they are:

  1. “Bridget Jones’s Diary”,  2001 . . . It has COLIN FIRTHin a reindeer sweater, a kiss in falling snow, and twinkling Christmas lights.
  1. “Trading Places”,  1983 . . . It’s set during Christmastime, but the filmmakers never intended for it to be perceived as a holiday movie, that’s why they released it in June.  Also, a pivotal scene takes place over New Year’s.
  1. “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”,  2005 . . . Father Christmas makes an appearance and hands the Pevensie kids presents.
  1. “Eyes Wide Shut”,  1999 . . . It opens with a fancy holiday party and there are lots of Christmas trees.
  1. “Gremlins”,  1984 . . . Gizmo was purchased as a Christmas gift and the entire movie takes place during the holidays.
  1. “Batman Returns”,  1992 . . . There’s a tree-lighting ceremony, mistletoe, and penguins with candy cane-striped torpedoes strapped to their backs.
  1. “While You Were Sleeping”,  1995 . . . It doesn’t mention Christmas, but the sweaters, snow, and familial love say otherwise.
  1. “Lethal Weapon”,  1987 . . . It opens to “Jingle Bell Rock”, it has a drug bust at a Christmas tree lot, and the film ends on Christmas Day.
  1. “Meet Me in St. Louis”,  1944 . . . There’s a Christmas Eve ball and it has the first version of JUDY GARLAND singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.
  1. “Die Hard”,  1988 . . . You didn’t think this movie would be left off this list, did you?  BRUCE WILLIS has stated it’s NOT a Christmas movie, but the inclusion of Christmas songs and imagery like Santa hats and party decorations says otherwise.

Not to mention it takes place between Christmas Eve and Day

The Blues and Lightning met in Tampa last night in a rematch from Tuesday.  On Tuesday, the Blue won 4-3 in shootouts.  Last night, 60 minutes was all that was needed.  The Lightning got the 4-2 win. Brandon Saad and Pavel Buchnevich scored for the Blues while Victor Hedman scored back to back goals in the 3rd to seal the win for the Lightning.  Up next, a game against the Panthers in Florida.  Puck drops at 12PM tomorrow afternoon.

Last night in Thursday Night Football, the Saints hosted the Dallas Cowboys…and it was pretty damn one sided.  The Cowboys ran away with the 27-17 win.  Dak Prescott threw for 238 yards and a touchdown.  Tony Pollard from the Cowboys rushed for 71 yards and a score.  Make sure to get the rest of your picks in by going to 1057thepoint.com/picks.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown has been suspended for three games without pay by the National Football League for misrepresenting his COVID-19 vaccination status. Bucs safety Mike Edwards received the same suspension.  Brown had been accused of obtaining a fake COVID vaccination card by his former personal chef.

Allow me to blow your mind:  With a record of 0-10-1, the Detroit Lions can STILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. The NFL on CBS Twitter account posted all the games that need to go their way between now and the end of the season for it to be possible, and it’s a lot.  But the Dallas Cowboys kept them alive last night by beating the New Orleans Saints. Sadly, everything else going Detroit’s way is about as likely as Aaron Rodgers taking a selfie with Dr. Fauci. . . mainly because the Lions have to win all six of their remaining games, starting with the Minnesota Vikings this weekend. After that, they play the Broncos, the Cardinals, the Falcons, the Seahawks, and the Packers. Also, both the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins have to beat the Saints.  But hey, it’s fun to dream.  For two more days, anyway.

The Oklahoma City Thunder now have the distinction of being blown out by the most points in NBA history. On Thursday night, The Memphis Grizzlies walloped OKC 152 – 79. The 73-point victory is the largest margin of victory by any NBA team, EVER.  Previously, the biggest win by a team was by 68 points. In 1991, the Cavaliers took out the Heat 148-80.

On the flip side of getting your teeth kicked in…the Phoenix Suns are currently doing the teeth kicking.  After a 114-103 victory Thursday night over the Pistons – the Suns set a franchise mark with 18 consecutive wins. The streak ties the 2019 Bucks for the longest of any NBA team in the last five seasons. The longest streak in NBA history belongs to the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, who won 33 straight games.

LeBron James has been cleared to return to the lineup for the Lakers’ game against the LA Clippers on Friday after a brief stint in the NBA’s health and safety protocols, the league announced Thursday. James has returned eight negative tests since returning to LA on Tuesday afternoon, after the Lakers star returned an initial positive test for COVID-19 in Sacramento on Tuesday morning. No we are hearing that he wasn’t positive at ALL.  The league put out a statement that said: “James was originally placed in the Protocols on Tuesday, November 30 after a series of tests delivered conflicting results, including an initial positive test that was collected on November 29. Additional testing confirmed that he is not a positive case.” the league said.  Didn’t matter though, the Lakers beat the Kings on Tuesday and were off yesterday.

Mizzou basketball was back on the floor yesterday as they took on Liberty.  And – it was ugly.  Liberty got the 21-point win against the Tigers.  66-45 final.  Up next for Mizzou, a games against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday.  The Billikens are in action tomorrow night against UAB.  Tip off from Chafietz is at 5:30PM.  The fighting Illini is at home against Rutgers.  Tip-off is at 6PM.

And finally – some local championships to remind ya about.  Luthern St Charles is in the Class 2 state finals for football today.  St Mary’s plays tomorrow in the Class 3 final.  As well as Holt in the Class 5 football championship.  Also – SLU has it’s Elite Eight D1 game tomorrow against Washington.  Kick off for that game is at 7PM.
