There are currently more young Black singer-songwriters working in Nashville than at any point in country music history. Many think that is due to the work of country music legend Charlie Pride. Mr. PRIDE passed away on Saturday in Dallas due to complications from COVID-19. He was 86. This took everyone by surprise because he never publicly announced he had the disease. It was just last Tuesday that he posted a video on Facebook about his new website, and he seemed fine. But after he passed away his family released a statement saying he was admitted to the hospital in late November with COVID-19 symptoms. He died almost a month to the day after getting the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the CMAs. That was also his last public performance. The show was held indoors, so people have been wondering if that’s where he caught the virus. The CMAs and Charley’s reps issued a joint statement on that. Quote, “Everyone followed strict testing protocols outlined by the city health department and unions. Charley was tested prior to traveling to Nashville. He was tested upon landing in Nashville, and again on show day, with all tests coming back negative. “After returning to Texas, Charley again tested negative multiple times. [We] are heartbroken by Charley’s passing. Out of respect for his family during their grieving period, we will not be commenting on this further.” He had 29 Number One hits between 1967 and 1988, plus 27 Top 10 Country Albums. He was the CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1971 and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. There’s a 33-mile stretch of road near his hometown of Sledge, Mississippi called “Charley Pride Highway.”
ASHANTI announced on Saturday that she tested positive for COVID-19, but said she wasn’t in any pain. She was supposed to do a “Verzuz” battle with KEYSHIA COLE, but it’s been postponed.
NANCY GRACE, her husband, her mom, and her 13-year-old twins all have coronavirus. Nancy’s mother is 88 years old, and being treated in the hospital. Nancy says, quote, “COVID is no joke, we thought we had done everything right. Please keep wearing masks, social distancing and stay safe . . . no family should go through this.”
Actress CAROL SUTTON died of complications from coronavirus last week. She was 76. She’s probably best remembered for playing Nurse Pam in “Steel Magnolias”.
FKA TWIGS filed a lawsuit against former boyfriend SHIA LABEOUF on Friday, accusing him of “relentless abuse,” sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress and giving her a sexually transmitted disease. The money will be donated to domestic abuse charities. They met in 2018, when she was cast in his movie “Honey Boy”. They started dating shortly after filming wrapped. Things started off great, but it wasn’t long before Shia started acting differently . . . he’d have rules about how many times a day she’d have to kiss and touch him, he didn’t like her talking to male waiters, and he didn’t let her wear clothes to bed. He’d sleep with a loaded gun next to the bed and when she tried to leave, he’d terrorize her. He’d violently grab her, wake her up in the middle of the night and choke her, lock her in rooms, and yell at her. Everything culminated in February of 2019, when they were driving in a remote area. He was driving recklessly and removed his seatbelt, and threatened to crash unless she “professed her love for him.” She begged to be let out of the car, so he pulled over at a gas station, and assaulted her, threw her against the car, screamed in her face, and forced her back in the car.
After word of the suit got out, SIA backed her up with her OWN story. She said, quote, “I too have been hurt emotionally by Shia, a pathological liar, who conned me into an adulterous relationship claiming to be single. “I believe he’s very sick, and [I] have compassion for him AND his victims. Just know, if you love yourself . . . stay safe, stay away. Shia isn’t copping to all these claims, but he admits he has issues. In an email to the “New York Times”, he said, quote, “I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel. I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. “I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.” Another former girlfriend, a stylist named Karolyn Pho, also came out with claims that Shia was violent and abusive during THEIR relationship. In another statement, Shia added, quote, “Many of these allegations are not true . . . [but I owe these women] the opportunity to air their statements publicly and accept accountability for those things I have done.” He added that he’s “a sober member of a 12-step program” and is in therapy. And, quote, “I am not cured of my PTSD and alcoholism . . . but I’m committed to doing what I need to do to recover, and I’ll forever be sorry to the people that I may have harmed along the way.” Shia has a history of turbulent behavior . . . but these are the most serious accusations to be made against him.
SIMON COWELL might sue the company that made the electric bike he wrecked on. The motorcycle Simon Cowell was riding is the Swind EB-01, sporting the following vital stats:
Top Speed – ~75 mph
Power – 15,000 watts (legal e-bike is 250-500 watts)
Battery – 1750 wh
Weight – over 100 lbs
Price – $20,400 – Road
Machines such as the Swind EB-01 are dangerous motorcycle masquerading as e-bikes. They are so outrageous and unsafe its country of origin, the UK has banned its use on public roads. It is a mystery why they call these e-bikes when they are clearly motorcycles. Perhaps its to avoid safety regulations and registration and licensing/training of owners that they try to fly under the radar. But clearly, they are dangerous machines that have no business being sold or used on trails, bike paths, or even roads.
“The Dark Knight,” “Shrek,” “Grease,” “The Blues Brothers,” “Lillies of the Field,” “The Hurt Locker,” “A Clockwork Orange,” “The Joy Luck Club” and “The Man With the Golden Arm” are among this year’s additions to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. “Lillies of the Field” star Sidney Poitier, who became the first Black person to win the Oscar for best actor. A place on the list — always made up of 25 films — guarantees the film will be preserved under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act. The criteria for selection is that the movies are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant. Monday’s selections bring the total to 800. This year’s selections include records of nine films directed by women and seven directed by filmmakers of color.
50 year old Mariah Carey has a New York Times best-seller with her book The Meaning of Mariah Carey, her life story from a low-income Long Island upbringing to the best-selling female artist of all time. Now she’s in talks to adapt the book into either a limited series or a feature film. And she may even direct whatever it turns out to be. No word on casting or when filming will start. Remember we are anxiously awaiting the same thing from Madonna who is also directing.

Lovie Smith simply didn’t win enough in his five seasons and ILLINOIS announced on Sunday, one day after a 28-10 loss to rival Northwestern, that Smith had been fired. Smith is owed a $2.3 million buyout that Whitman said will come from the athletics department funds, not a private donor. Lovie Smith, 62, went 17-39 in his tenure at Illinois and 10-33 in the Big Ten Conference. BTW Smith’s $2.3 million buyout is relatively low compared to other buyouts across the country — Auburn on Sunday fired coach Gus Malzhan with a $21.7 million buyout.
It has been nearly seven years since the Missouri men’s basketball team appeared in The Associated Press Top 25, and it just may happen Monday when voters submit their ballots. A big weekend happened with Missouri’s Saturday night win after the team held off Illinois for a third straight win in the Braggin’ Rights game, 81-78 at Mizzou Arena. Tigers remained unbeaten Saturday night, at 5-0, with a second victory over a nationally ranked team.
The New York Times reported the Cleveland baseball team plans to stop utilizing the nickname, which they’ve done for over a century, (105 years) despite the pleas to stop from the very people it caricatured. The team spent 2019 removing logos of the mascot, Chief Wahoo, so this move isn’t a total shock. Yet it’s still stunning because of what it represents. Officials from the Cleveland team spoke with numerous Indigenous groups across the country as they started to rethink their stance. Native activists have fought to change the mascots almost since their inception. According to the report, the organization could move forward this week with a replacement name in the same manner that the Washington Football Team did—adopting a temporary name and consulting with the public for a new, permanent name.
Following the commercial success and surprisingly-warm critical reception for Mike Tyson’s eyebrow-raising decision to fight fellow fiftysomething Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition in California on Nov. 28, Evander Holyfield has made his intentions to be “Iron” Mike’s next opponent known.
Holyfield is 58, while Tyson is now 54. The two competed in a pair of huge heavyweight championship bouts in the 1990s, with the second providing one of boxing’s most controversial ever finishes as a frustrated Tyson bit a chunk out of Holyfield’s ear in response to what he feels were repeated headbutts in the first fight, won by “The Real Deal.”
Last fighting as a professional in 2011 at the age of 48 with a late stoppage of Brian Nielsen in the defeated boxer’s home country of Denmark, Holyfield has been keeping in shape and is keen to partake in the current trend of semi-competitive encounters between aging legends of the sport.
Holyfield told some show that he is confident of completing the trilogy with Tyson in a very unique manner.
He said this “It’s coming together”… “I think the fight is gonna come off. I don’t know what it will be like. But it will be a competition and I always give my very best. I like other people, but I don’t want them to beat me. I don’t take any chances.
“I’m 58 years old. I’ve been practicing, but there wasn’t anybody swinging at me at the time. It’s different when someone’s trying to hit you! I’ll take it one day at a time.”
Holyfield continued to say that despite what happened in 1997, it didn’t take him long at all to return to good terms with Tyson and they are actually friends now. I even read somewhere that he watched the Tyson Jones Jr fight and that he felt that Tyson won the bout.
Tom Brady has been renting Derek Jeter’s 30,000 square-foot, seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom waterfront mansion in the Davis Islands neighborhood in Tampa on a temporary basis. Now comes word that Brady and Bundchen have plunked down $17 million for property on some Island, famously known as “Billionaire’s Bunker.” The couple’s plan is to raze the existing home on the property and build a new dream home in its place.
The decision by the super-couple to relocate their family on a more permanent basis — although it merits noting Brady and Bundchen own high-end properties all around the globe — is hardly a surprise. The NFL legend did not hide his disdain this week for the brutal winters he endured during his two-decade run with the New England Patriots saying this: “You won’t catch me dead living in the Northeast anymore.”
