NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON wrote an op-ed while he watched thousands of protesters march past his home in New York. It touches on Colin Kaepernick, Rodney King, the stats behind white privilege, and his own experiences of being targeted by police because he’s black. The title is “Reflections on the Color of My Skin,” and you can read the whole thing on Facebook. But there’s a part at the end where he lists six things he thinks we need to do to really address the problem of police brutality. Here’s what he came up with:
Quibi’s senior executives will take pay cuts as the short-form streaming service looks to cut costs. Quibi’s chief executive Meg Whitman and its founder Jeffrey Katzenberg will each take a 10 percent hit to their salaries, according to a copy of an internal memo. In that correspondence, Katzenberg and Whitman wrote that the company was looking “for ways to tighten our belt,” but said that Quibi was “in a good financial position” and said the company has recently brought on “a dozen” new employees. They said Qubi is “not laying off staff as a part of cost saving measures.” But a report from the Wall Street Journal said the company has “discussed” layoffs for roughly 10 percent of the company’s 250 employees. Quibi has yet to break the 2 million subscriber threshold, despite offering a promo deal for 3 months of free streaming prior to its launch (though it’s netted 4.5 million downloads). By comparison, even struggling Apple TV+ is said to have signed up around 10 million subscribers by February even with its lean library of originals. Disney+, which launched around the same time as Apple’s streaming service, had a staggering 54 million subscriptions as of May, while CBS All Access and Showtime—which have been around much longer but aren’t goliaths in the space—recently reported a combined 13.5 million subscriptions.
Have you seen any of Geico’s recent ads where people talk about insurance issues? Like the one where two people talk about the “clogging problem” in their apartment . . . and it turns out the family above them are clog dancers. Well, another one of those ads features a couple with a “rat problem.” And RATT the BAND is featured in it. It shows them playing their 1984 hit, “Round and Round” in various parts of the house. And now 36 years later, it’s a HIT again . . . all because of that commercial. This week, it hit #18 on Billboard’s Top 20 Rock Digital Song Sales chart.
The band posted about it on their blog and thanked fans . . . “old and new” . . . for pushing the song up the charts this year. Lead singer STEPHEN PEARCY talked about the commercial in a recent interview. He said it was fun to do, and that the timing worked out really well, because everyone’s been stuck at home watching TV. The ad debuted about two months ago, and it’s already aired over 10,000 times. It also has close to nine million views on YouTube.
YouTuber Jake Paul is facing charges after videos showed up online of him present during the looting of a mall in Arizona. He is not accused of stealing anything from Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall on May 30. Instead, police charged him with criminal trespass and unlawful assembly, which are misdemeanors. Cops say they got 100’s of tips online that it was him there after the protest was declared an unlawful assembly and the rioters were ordered to leave.” Police say he illegally entered the mall after it was closed amid George Floyd protests. He has never denied being there. But he maintains that he and his videographer were there only to document the protests.. On Thursday, Paul, who has more than 20 million subscribers on his channel, tweeted again about the controversy. “(G)imme my charges and let’s put the focus back on George Floyd and Black Lives Matter,”
You don’t mess with a guy named Dick Wolf…Dick Wolf wasted no time firing a writer from one of his TV series after the writer posted a about looters in Hollywood this week. Think again…” He also posted a photo, captioned “Curfew,” of himself posing with a gun. The posts started making the rounds on social media, and within hours, Law & Order creator and producer Wolf had issued a statement, CNN reports: “I will not tolerate this conduct, especially during our hour of national grief. I am terminating Craig Gore immediately.” Gore was supposed to be working on an upcoming Law & Order spinoff. Variety reports his agent has also cut ties with him. Law & Order star ICE T tweeted in response to Wolf’s move, “Oh sh–.. The Big Boss is cleaning house… RESPECT.”
Kanye West has donated $2 million to George Floyd-related causes, and he’s set up a college savings fund to fully cover tuition for George’s six-year-old daughter, Gianna. Kanye’s rep adds that he’s also donating to several black-owned businesses that have been impacted by the unrest. And he even showed up to march with protesters in his hometown of Chicago.
BTW, rumors abound on the Kim and Kanye marriage falling apart. During quarantine they haven’t been able to hire help with the kids etc. apparently Kayne at so much a good helper around the house and Kim is doing everything including law school, and is over it. Fans have actually started throwing out guesses as to when a split of some sort hits the media. A few have said as soon as the end of June. The management team representing Tiger King star Joe Exotic says the recent ruling awarding Carole Baskin control of his zoo is “treachery,” CNN reports. A judge has just ruled in favor of Baskin, and she is set to assume the G.W. Zoo in Oklahoma while Exotic remains in prison. “While we again acknowledge it is truly time to pray for justice for George Floyd’s family as well as an end to systemic racism in America, we must address Carol [sic] Baskin’s treachery before it goes unchecked,” a tweet from Exotic’s team read. Exotic plans to appeal the ruling. Current owner Jeff Lowe has 120 days to vacate the premises and remove the animals. He says he plans to open a new Tiger King park within that time frame.
STL date WAS June 13th..Tool say they are canceling, rather than just postponing, the remainder of their North American tour because of the coronavirus, The band also said “tying up our fans’ money for months, if not a full year, is unfair” while announcing the decision. The NHL announced that the league will enter the second stage of its return-to-play plan on Monday amid its attempt to resume the 2019-20 season, which has been suspended since March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Which is good news…and we are learning more about the playoff structure. With the NHL already having revealed its plan to resume the 2019-20 season with 24 teams, the league announced more information about its amended structure for this summer. The qualifying round will be a best-of-five series, while the four subsequent playoff rounds will use the best-of-seven format. Teams will also be reseeded upon the conclusion of each round. The date on when play will resume remains unknown.
The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Thursday one unidentified player tested positive for the coronavirus but is “recovered and feeling well.” He was isolated in his home after experiencing symptoms and was not in Pittsburgh. Several NHL players tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after the 2019-20 season was paused because of the pandemic. At least three Colorado Avalanche players tested positive, while at least one Ottawa Senators player tested positive.
The NBA Board of Governors approved a plan to restart the season with 22 teams in a 29-1 vote Thursday. The Portland Trail Blazers were reportedly the lone “no” vote. The Trail Blazers benefit from the new system, which allows teams on the periphery of the playoff standings to compete for a spot in the postseason. Portland is tied for the No. 9 spot in the Western Conference, 3.5 games behind the Grizzlies for the No. 8 spot. The team will have regular-season games to try to climb the standings, as well as a potential play-in game if it ends up as the No. 9 seed.
As states around the country begin to slowly reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Texas is one leading the charge. Having already entered Phase 2 of reopening and are now transitioning to Phase 3. They are permitting sports venues — among other businesses — to expand their capacity from 25 percent to 50 percent, which is a notable jump for professional outfits in North and South Texas. This directly impacts the two NFL franchises in the state — the Cowboys and the Texans — but also every other major sports franchise in North and South Texas. There has been no word on how the Cowboys, as one example, plan to move forward with this information, but they and the Texans have lots of time to not only figure it out. This is good news for the Dallas Stars though, and likely the City of Dallas as a whole, considering they are in the running to be a “host city” for conference play.
The WNBA is reportedly considering a 22-game regular season that would begin in late July. Games would be held at IMG Academy in Florida, starting July 24, with the playoffs ending in October. Players have yet to agree to the proposal. There is not yet a plan for the postseason under the current proposal from the league. The WNBA normally uses a 36-game regular season with the top eight overall teams advancing to the playoffs. The dates of the proposed season may also create an obstacle for the league as many players have contracts with overseas teams during what’s normally the offseason in the United States.
Cristiano Ronaldo has a new record to add to his ever-growing list of accolades. The Portuguese star is now the first soccer player in history to crack $1 billion in career earnings. Ronaldo, 35, becomes just the third athlete to ever reach this level of wealth, joining Tiger Woods and Floyd Mayweather Jr. He is the first team-sport athlete to accomplish the feat. Ronaldo is now No. 4 on the list of highest-paid celebrities—one spot above rival Lionel Messi. Kylie Jenner, Kanye West and Roger Federer rank one through three, respectively. Ronaldo reportedly earned $105 million over the last year while Messi earned $104 million.
