The NFL is set to release its full schedule, including preseason games, at the end of this week without any major adjustments for the possible impact caused by the coronavirus pandemic. An NFL Spokesman said: “We plan to start on time. If we have to make adjustments, we will be prepared to do so based on the latest guidance from our medical experts and public health officials and current and future government regulations.” The NFL regular season opener will still be set for Sept. 10 while the Super Bowl will still be scheduled for Feb. 7 in Tampa, Fla.
Free-agent quarterback Andy Dalton agreed to a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys, the team announced Saturday. Dalton’s deal is worth $3 million guaranteed and up to $7 million total. Many expected the Bengals to move on from Dalton this offseason. He was due to earn more than $17 million this year, and the Bengals selected their quarterback of the future, Joe Burrow, with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft. Given his 2020 salary, Cincinnati was unable to find a trade partner and released Dalton on Thursday.
Cam Newton remains a free agent, but the veteran quarterback doesn’t intend to sign with a team as a backup. If needed, the 30-year-old can wait until an injury to a starter requires a team to look for a high-level replacement. The former Panthers star missed all but two games last season because of a foot injury and has also recently dealt with shoulder problems. With coronavirus pandemic-related travel restrictions preventing in-person visits, the questions have hurt his market in free agency. According to reports, Newton plans to wait until he can get examined and cleared by team doctors before he signs.
MGM Resorts International has offered to create a “bubble city” for leagues like the NBA and WNBA on the Las Vegas Strip. MGM proposed housing athletes and related sports staffs in a quarantined block on the Strip. The offer was extended to the NBA, WNBA, NHL and MLS—all leagues that have yet to figure out when or how they can safely finish their seasons. In MGM’s proposal to the NBA, the resort reportedly said The Mandalay Bay would serve as the hub since it’s connected to other hotels and a convention center. Athletes’ families would be able to stay with them in the quarantined resort and have access to amenities like restaurants, casinos and spas. “As many as 24 basketball courts could be built at the convention center at Mandalay Bay. Five would be used to telecast games, while the others would be for practice.”
Tampa Bay Rays ace Blake Snell won the inaugural MLB The Show Players League on Sunday with a three-game sweep. Snell’s Rays won 5-1 in Game 1, 3-2 in Game 2 and 6-0 in Game 3 in the best-of-five championship series. The three-inning games were televised on ESPN. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast will receive a $25,000 donation thanks to Snell’s championship victory.
A couple of weeks ago, former Montreal Canadiens tough guy Georges Laraque (George Luh-Rock) was running five or six days a week as he trained for a marathon. Now, the former NHL enforcer’s biggest challenge is trying to breathe clearly as he fights the coronavirus from a hospital in Montreal. He says he cant even get up without losing his breath. In a series of videos from his hospital bed, the 43-year-old said he began feeling symptoms a week ago Sunday when he was helping to deliver groceries to vulnerable people in his community. He went on to say – “I have pneumonia in both my lungs, they’re affected by the COVID because I have asthma; I have to have oxygen blowing through my nose. The nights are the worst. At night, I have fevers a couple times a night. I have to get up and take pills.”
The judge in the United States women’s soccer team’s equal pay lawsuit rejected the players’ most important claims on Friday. In his ruling, he dismissed the players’ arguments that they were underpaid by U.S. Soccer in comparison with the men’s national team. In fact, the judge said, that the women’s team had actually earned more “on both a cumulative and an average per-game basis” than the men’s team during the years at issue in the lawsuit. The players, through a spokeswoman, said they would appeal the decision. After the decision was made public, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden weighed in. He tweeted: To @USWNT: don’t give up this fight. This is not over yet. To @USSoccer: equal pay, now. Or else when I’m president, you can go elsewhere for World Cup funding.
