WEEZER RESPONDS TO ONLINE BREAKUP CAMPAIGN

At least the guys in Weezer have a sense of humor about their critics on the Internet who want to pay them to stop making music. Drummer Patrick Wilson posted on Twitter, “If they can make it 20 (million), we’ll do the deluxe breakup.”

Meanwhile, we discovered — with some very thorough Googling — that the man who launched the site, James Burns, has a band of his own called Police Teeth. Burns has been getting a lot of attention for the campaign but tells The New York Times, “I’ve actually received death threats over this, believe it or not. Some people have told me they wish I would get AIDS. This whole campaign, I fully admit that it’s silly.”

Burns launched the campaign earlier this week hoping to raise $10 million on ThePoint.com to pay the guys in Weezer to split up and never make music again.

At press time, the campaign had raised $372.
