Last Sunday’s episode of The Simpsons featured a parody of Morrissey, and, in a very surprising and not-at-all predictable turn of events, the former Smiths frontman is not amused.

In the episode, Lisa becomes imaginary friends with Quilloughby, a English rock musician who’s known for his work with his ’80s indie band The Snuffs. Quilloughby, who’s voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, writes lyrics about his “militant vegetarianism,” and joins Lisa to sing a song called “Everyone Is Horrid Except Me (And Possibly You).”

At the end of the episode, though, Lisa becomes tired of Quilloughby’s incessant wining. They eventually end up at a concert where the real Quilloughby shows up, who turns out to be an overweight, hateful and xenophobic jerk who needs money after “suing people for saying things about me that were completely true.” Not only that, but he’s no longer vegan.

“You can jeer while I enjoy this pastrami on rye,” Quilloughby yells at the booing crowd. “I was [vegan], until I found out veganism was invented by foreigners, of whom there are far too many on this planet.”

In response to the episode, Morrissey posted a statement on his Facebook attributed to the musician’s manager, Peter Katsis.

“When a show stoops so low to use harshly hateful tactics like showing the Morrissey character with his belly hanging out of his shirt (when he has never looked like that at any point in his career) makes you wonder who the real hurtful, racist group is here,” the statement reads. “Even worse — calling the Morrissey character out for being a racist, without pointing out any specific instances, offers nothing. It only serves to insult the artist.”

Morrissey has come under fire in recent years due to his support of the far-right For Britain political party.
