The National has premiered a new song called “Your Mind Is Not Your Friend,” featuring guest vocals by Phoebe Bridgers.
The track appears on the upcoming National album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein.
“When I feel stuck, I’ll often grab a book off the shelf just to get some words in my head,” says frontman Matt Berninger. “The first two pages of Frankenstein ended up triggering ‘Your Mind Is Not Your Friend.'”
“The book starts off with the narrator on a voyage near the Arctic Circle, and that image of being adrift helped me to write about feeling disconnected and lost and lacking in purpose,” he continues. “Once I started confronting that strange, blurry panic of not having ideas, everything began to crack open a bit.”
You can listen to “Your Mind Is Not Your Friend” now via digital outlets. Its accompanying video, starring Berninger’s brother Tom and directed by Bridgers’ brother Jackson, is streaming now on YouTube.
Along with the song, The National is making a donation to Tiny Changes, the mental health organization founded in honor of late Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison.
First Two Pages of Frankenstein, which also features the single “Tropic Morning News,” drops April 28. Bridgers sings on another song off the record, “This Isn’t Helping,” while Taylor Swift guests on a track called “The Alcott.”
