St. Vincent has released a cover of “Funkytown,” the 1979 disco classic originally recorded by Lipps Inc.
The cover was recorded for the soundtrack to the upcoming Minions sequel movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru. The faithful rendition would comfortably fit on St. Vincent’s new, ’70s-esque album Daddy’s Home. It’s even accompanied by a visualizer that features a Minion-ized version of Annie Clark dressed in her Daddy’s Home getup.
You can listen to St. Vincent’s “Funkytown” now via digital outlets.
The Minions 2 soundtrack, which was produced by Jack Antonoff, will be released July 1, the same day the movie hits theaters. It also includes the collaboration between Tame Impala and Diana Ross, “Turn Up the Sunshine,” as well as contributions from Phoebe Bridgers, Bleachers and Brittany Howard, among others.
St. Vincent, meanwhile, is gearing up to launch a European tour later this month in support of Daddy’s Home, which was released in May 2021. Clark and company will be back in the U.S. in September to play a run of dates with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Roxy Music.
