Radiohead is reportedly suing singer Lana Del Rey over similarities between her song “Get Free” and the band’s breakthrough 1993 hit “Creep.” British tabloids reported on Sunday (January 7th) that the quintet was taking legal action against Del Rey over the track, which appears on her latest album Lust For Life. Initial reports suggested that the two sides were trying to settle instead of going to court.

Del Rey posted a tweet confirming the story, writing, “It’s true about the lawsuit. Although I know my song wasn’t inspired by ‘Creep,’ Radiohead feel it was and want 100% of the publishing — I offered up to 40 over the last few months but they will only accept 100. Their lawyers have been relentless, so we will deal with it in court.”

  • Representatives for Radiohead had yet to comment on the lawsuit at press time. It was reported in the U.K. by The Sun that the band was looking to “receive compensation or be credited on the list of songwriters to receive royalties.”
  • According to Rolling Stone, Radiohead itself faced legal action over “Creep” when it was first released and ended up giving songwriting credits on the track to Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood, the writers of the Hollies‘ “The Air That I Breathe.”
  • Radiohead admitted the similarities between the two songs’ melody and chord structure and the lawsuit was settled out of court, with the band giving a percentage of its publishing to Hammond and Hazlewood.
  • “Creep” appeared on Radiohead’s debut LP, Pablo Honey.
