K.Flay is taking a trip back to the ’90s with a new covers EP.

The three-track collection, dubbed Don’t Judge a Song by Its Cover, features the “Blood in the Cut” singer’s renditions of Green Day‘s “Brain Stew,” The Offspring‘s “Self Esteem” and Limp Bizkit‘s immortal “Break Stuff.”

In a statement, K.Flay explains that she wanted her covers to present these songs “in a totally new context and really expose the vulnerability of the lyrics.”

“Each cover is a reimagining of a ’90s rock hit that was heavy, aggressive, and male-fronted,” she says. “But when you break them down, they are SUPER EMOTIONAL. So this is me celebrating an era that’s had a huge influence on my career, and kind of excavating the emotionality I found in these iconic songs.”

K.Flay’s most recent album is 2019’s Solutions. In 2020, she teamed up with X Ambassadors and grandson for the song “Zen,” and producer Whethan for the track “Hurting on Purpose.”
