Jack White has announced a ban on mobile phones at shows on his upcoming tour, according to a press release issued by the former White Stripes frontman. Revealing that his concerts will be a “phone-free, 100-percent human experience,” White said, “We think you’ll enjoy looking up from your gadgets for a little while and experience music and our shared love of it IN PERSON.”

White explained how the band will work, saying, “Upon arrival at the venue, all phones and other photo or video-capturing gizmos will be secured in a Yondr pouch that will be unlocked at the end of the show. You keep your pouch secured phone on you during the show and, if needed, can unlock your phone at any time in a designated Yondr Phone Zone located in the lobby or concourse.”

  • He added that fans who want to post about the shows instead of watching them live can follow and re-post content from his newly launched @officialjackwhitelive Instagram account.
  • White said a while back that he sees social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as venues that destroy music’s mystique: “Those are not romantic tools. I don’t see how they could be romantic. Ease of use, there’s no doubt about that, you can’t argue the ease of use and the click and instantaneous gratification. But I felt a lot better when I was trying to find, like, I couldn’t find a Led Zeppelin T-shirt when I was a kid. I didn’t even know where to go get one in Detroit. Now you can get it at Wal-Mart, which is great. I’m glad those kids are getting turned on to it, but also there has to be other things involved that they can search out for and get for themselves and not just have it handed to them. Because as soon as you click on something, what do you do five seconds later? You click off of it.”
  • In 2014, White slammed people using phones during shows, saying, “People can’t clap anymore, because they’ve got a f**king texting thing in their f**king hand . . . If they can’t give me that energy back? Maybe I’m wasting my time.”
  • White’s first North American tour in three years kicks off its first leg on April 19th in Detroit before wrapping up on June 9th in Toronto. Another string of dates starts on August 6th in Minneapolis and ends later that month in Las Vegas.
  • White will be touring in support of his new solo album, Boarding House Reach, which will arrive on March 23rd.

SIDE NOTES: White will unveil a new track from Boarding House Reach called “Corporation” this Friday (January 26th) at midnight local time. The song will be the third previewed by White from the LP, following “Connected By Love” and “Respect Commander.”
