Foo Fighters kick off North American tour Wednesday night

Foo Fighters kicked off a lengthy North American tour on Wednesday night (April 18th) in Austin, Texas, and guitarist Chris Shiflett told Rolling Stone that even though frontman Dave Grohl makes up a set list for the show every night, it’s usually only good for the first two of the band’s three hours onstage.

Shiflett explained, “Things change on a dime. When we get into that final third, Dave will start cutting, adding and rearranging songs, or he’ll do stuff in a different order. You have to stay in the moment the whole time. You don’t want to be up there thinking about, you know, the room service. It keeps you on your toes.”

Grohl told us a while back that it’s vital for the band to change up the live show from night to night: “You’ve got to change it up. To keep things interesting musically, like, that’s our lifeline, you know, and to experiment and do things we’ve never done before. So we go out every night and we play all the loud, old rock stuff, we play all the loud new rock stuff, we play acoustic stuff, newer acoustic stuff, we just kind of change it up a little bit.”

The Foos continue to support their ninth album, 2017’s Concrete And Gold, and Shiflett said that the material from that LP has been changing on the road as well. He remarked, “Before the album came out, when we were doing a lot of festivals, we were doing really raw versions of the songs. In the past few months, we’ve brought in some backup singers for the songs on the record that have a lot of layered harmony vocal parts. We’ve never really done anything like that before, and it sounds really good.”

Shiflett added that the band is playing “four or five new songs a night” but has been swapping different songs from Concrete And Gold to see how they go over.

The Foos’ North American tour will continue through the spring, summer and fall, with the last scheduled date on October 18th in St. Paul, Minnesota. See the Foo Fighters at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in St. Louis on October 13th. Get details on the Iron Age Concert Calendar.

SIDE NOTES: Chris Shiflett also told Rolling Stone that the production on the Foo’s current tour is bigger than ever. The group now has a drum riser so big that when they toured South America earlier this year, many promoters wouldn’t let them use it. Shiflett said, “Taylor (Hawkins) is on a giant drum riser that goes all the way into the lights at one point. The production’s the best I think we’ve ever had.”
