Dream Theater has released a new song called “The Alien,” the first single and opening track off the band’s upcoming album A View from the Top of the World.

“It has the adventure, the untraditional structure, the heaviness, and the hooks,” says guitarist John Petrucci of “The Alien.” “It really set the tone for the album.”

At nine minutes and 32 seconds, “The Alien” certainly is an adventure. And if that’s not enough to satiate your proggy cravings, don’t worry: that’s only the fourth-longest song on the album. “Awaken the Master” clocks in at 9:47, while “Sleeping Giant” tops the 10-minute mark. Oh, and The View title track, which closes the record, lasts an epic 20 minutes and 24 seconds.

You can listen to “The Alien” now via digital outlets, and watch its accompanying video streaming now on YouTube.

A View from the Top of the World is Dream Theater’s 15th studio album. It will arrive in full October 22.
