A recording by late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell is included on Johnny Cash: Forever Words, a collaborative album consisting of songs created from Johnny Cash‘s unknown poetry, lyrics, and letters and set to music by an array of contemporary artists. Cornell set some of Cash’s most introspective words to original music in a tune called “You Never Knew My Mind,” which turned out to be one of Cornell’s final solo recordings before his death last May.

  • Cash himself, who died in 2003, recorded Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage” 21 years ago for his Grammy-winning album Unchained.
  • Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, invited a wide variety of musicians to create new music to accompany a large trove of unpublished material, including handwritten letters, poems and documents that the elder Cash penned across the entirety of his life.
  • Other artists on the album include Roseanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves, Alison Krauss, T. Bone Burnett, John Mellencamp, Jewel, Elvis Costello and more.
  • Johnny Cash: Forever Words will be available on CD, 2LP vinyl and digital formats on Friday, April 6th.
