Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo has unveiled a surprise new single, "Medicine For Melancholy," which is Cuomo's first as a solo artist. The track trades Weezer's guitars for sweeping synths and handclapped beats while still boasting Weezer's penchant for big hooks. It's unclear whether "Medicine for Melancholy" is a one-off single from the Weezer singer or a preview of an upcoming solo album.

Cuomo has previously released three installments in his Alone series, a collection of home demos and acoustic recordings. The most recent arrived in 2011 with Alone III: The Pinkerton Years. Outside of Weezer, Cuomo has also recorded as part of the J-pop duo Scott & Rivers.

Weezer released its 11th studio album, Pacific Daydream, in October 2017.

The band recently set May 25th as the release date for the self-titled "Black Album" -- a sort of sequel to 2016's "White Album" -- before the surprise arrival of "Medicine for Melancholy" on Friday.

The band originally planned on issuing the "Black Album" first, but Cuomo instead came up with the material that ended up forming Pacific Daydream.

Cuomo described the "Black Album" to NME as "darker," and "more experimental and wildly negative."

Weezer has announced a co-headlining summer tour with alternative legends Pixies that will begin June 23rd in Tampa, Florida and will wrap up in Phoenix on August 12th.
