SMASHING PUMPKINS ACOUSTIC EP NOW OUT ON iTUNES

The Smashing Pumpkins issued a four-song acoustic EP through the iTunes store on Wednesday (January 2nd), titled American Gothic. All of the songs except one, "The Rose March," were written by frontman Billy Corgan last summer while the band did residencies in Asheville, North Carolina and San Francisco. Corgan said in a recent interview that the band had very little material left over from the sessions for its 2007 comeback album, Zeitgeist: "We thought it was a fair criticism that we'd sort of gotten too record-happy, and felt that probably some of the best work that we'd come up with suffered because we were spending so much energy trying to pull up stuff that wasn't as good. So we really went into this going, 'Let's just work on the best stuff, and the other stuff's gonna have to live on the side of the road.'"

The set is available for purchase on its own or as part of a deluxe iTunes version of Zeitgeist.

Although American Gothic will only be available online in the U.S., a physical version of the disc will be sold internationally. Digital buyers can download the EP artwork at the band's official web site.

The EP was recorded during a recent break in the Pumpkins' touring schedule.

The band will launch a European trek on January 27th in Belgrade, Serbia.
