PEARL JAM'S STONE GOSSARD SAYS RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS CHANGED THEIR LIVES

Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith sat down to chat for an hour together in a new video posted at Music Radar, in which Gossard admits that the Chili Peppers changed Pearl Jam's lives by taking them on an early tour. Gossard recalled, "We went from selling no records on that tour to selling a bunch of records by the end of it."

Gossard added that watching the Chili Peppers play every night made the members of Pearl Jam work harder on their performance, saying, "Being able to be on the side of the stage and watch like you and Flea get into it . . . I mean, that like really affected me dramatically. And you guys were so good to us too."

The Chili Peppers took Pearl Jam out on a two-month fall tour in 1991 that also featured the Smashing Pumpkins.

Pearl Jam got the slot when former Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons -- who was friends with Eddie Vedder -- gave Flea a Pearl Jam tape to listen to.

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament told us not long ago that the band's goals when they started out were modest: "You know, I think we all thought, like, if we sold 50, 60,000 records, that would allow us to make a new record and, you know, I think mostly we wanted to get out and play. You know, I think we wanted to be a touring band and we wanted to be better musicians and we wanted to be more powerful and tighter. And we knew in that process we'd be better songwriters, and so I think for us, you know, at the time the focus was just to be a better band."

Gossard and Smith also reminisced in the video about other times they hung out together as well as little side projects that they played together in from time to time.

Pearl Jam will head out on a North American tour next month, while the Chili Peppers are currently at work on their 11th studio album.
