Shelby Miller and three relievers combined on a three-hitter as the Cardinals beat the Padres 6-2 to avoid a three-game sweep from Petco.  Oscar Taveras hit a two-run homer, and Matt Holiday drove in pair of runs in the victory.  Adam Wainwright takes the hill tonight against the Brewers.

The Cards are getting some help with their starting rotation for the stretch run.  The Cards have acquired right-hander John Lackey, minor league pitcher Corey Littrell and cash from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for pitcher Joe Kelly and first baseman/outfielder Allen Craig.  Lackey is 11-and-7 with a 3.60 ERA this season.  Cards General Manager John Mozeliak says Kelly and Craig have been instrumental in the team's success over the last few years

Other trades that went down yesterday…Boston pretty much traded their entire team yesterday.  You know about the Lester trade to the A’s.  Of course the Lackey trade to the Cardinals.  They also traded Stephen Drew to the Yankees. David Price got shipped from Tampa to Detroit.

One of the craziest things from yesterday…Austin Jackson was in the outfield for the Detroit Tigers in the top of the 7th, as the batter had a 2-2 count, the manager for the Tigers comes out, pulls Jackson from the game and it’s over.  He was traded and per MLB league rules, he’s not allowed to play for his former team.  Jackson was sent to the Mariners in the David Price deal.  HERE IS THE VIDEO

Ray Rice from the Baltimore Ravens apologized yesterday for hitting his wife back in February.  He says he let her down, and her family, and his mother, who didn't teach him to be that way . . . and also everyone in Baltimore, along with his teammates.  He's been suspended for two games because of it.

The College Football Coaches Poll was released on Thursday and the Missouri Tigers missed the cut for the top-25.  Mizzou enters the preseason poll with 126 votes and a number-26 ranking.  The Tigers finished last season with a 12-and-2 record and won the Cotton Bowl against Oklahoma State 41-31.  The Tigers open up 2014 at home against South Dakota State on August 30th.
