30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto returns to the screen next month in Dallas Buyers Club, a new film in which he co-stars with Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner. McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, a real-life Texas electrician who battled the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies to find alternative treatments after being diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986. Leto plays a transgender AIDS patient named Rayon, who helps Woodruff start the Dallas Buyers Club, where others with the disease can purchase the medications Woodruff brings into the country.
At a press conference for the film on Monday (October 14th) in Los Angeles, Leto was asked how AIDS has impacted his own life: "I first moved to California, I rented a bedroom in a three-bedroom apartment. One of the rooms was rented by a man in his 40s, who was very frail and obviously not well, and then I learned he had AIDS. And I watched week after week as he withered away and ultimately passed away. He was full of humor and charm and grace, a lot like Rayon."
Leto lost 30 pounds for his role, while McConaughey lost 38. Leto is being touted as a possible Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actor, while McConaughey is a lock for a Best Actor nomination.
Dallas Buyers Club will arrive in theaters on November 1st.
30 Seconds To Mars has just completed a North American tour behind the band's fourth album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams. The band next heads to Europe at the end of this month.
