Filmmaker Sofia Coppola has just finished directing a new music video for Phoenix, the French alternative band fronted by her husband, Thomas Mars. According to The Playlist, Mars said in an Australian interview that Coppola had completed shooting the clip but did not say what song it was for. This is not the first time that Coppola has tried to put her husband's music on film: back in 2010 she attempted to use the Phoenix song "Love Like A Sunset" as the basis for a movie, but ended up abandoning the project and using the track in the opening scene of her film Somewhere.
Phoenix ended up writing the score for Somewhere as well, and has also contributed music to Coppola's latest film, The Bling Ring, which is just coming out on DVD and VOD.
Meanwhile, the latest single from Phoenix's fifth album, Bankrupt!, has just cracked the Modern Rock Top 10. Guitarist Laurent Brancowitz spoke with us about the track, "Trying To Be Cool": "We really enjoyed the idea of writing a song about, not describing how cool you are, but how cool you want to be, you know. We discovered the power, you know, of putting yourself not in the place of the winner, but of the loser, you know. That was a very big discovery for us."
"Trying To Be Cool" is Phoenix's fourth straight U.S. hit. Bankrupt! cracked the Billboard album chart's Top 10 in May, debuting at Number Four with 50,000 copies sold in its first week -- both a sales and chart peak for the French quartet.
The record follows up 2009's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, which featured the hit singles "1901" and "Lisztomania."
Phoenix plays on Friday (September 20th) at the Music Midtown Festival in Atlanta and on Saturday (September 21st) at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas.
