Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan is adding columnist to his other duties as musician, producer, cabaret performer and winemaker. According to Loudwire, Keenan will begin writing a bi-weekly column for "Up On The Sun," the music blog of the Phoenix New Times, beginning on Monday (September 10th). The site says that Keenan's column "will feature his freewheeling examinations on whatever he feels like writing about, including music, wine, and . . . well, you'll see."
As for Keenan's musical endeavors, his band A Perfect Circle is scheduled to play Australia's Soundwave Festival early next year, while Tool is slowly assembling material for its first album since 2006.
Although it's been a while since fans heard new Tool music, Keenan told us a while back that he's perfectly comfortable taking a long time between projects: "Some new band, their first two records are the ones that are the freshest, 'cause they've had all their lives to write them. And then that third record ends up being all about the inside of a bus and something that happened backstage 'cause what else have they seen? And I've pretty much tried my best to avoid that album by taking time between writing projects to kind of absorb life in general -- have some experiences, read a few books, get into a different headspace and then wait 'til the time is right."
In recent years, Keenan has recorded two albums with his music/comedy act Puscifer, while also starring in a documentary called Blood And Wine about the efforts by him and his partner Eric Glomski to successfully launch vineyards in the rough climate of northern Arizona.
