Although they met back in February, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger and pop singer Avril Lavigne only officially started dating on Canada Day, July 1st -- just five weeks before Kroeger asked fellow Canadian Lavigne to marry him on August 8th. In a new interview with People magazine, Kroeger said, "We think it's very cool that our anniversary will always be on Canada Day. We can't wait to start our life together."
Kroeger and Lavigne first met when he was tasked with helping her write songs for her new album earlier in the year. Even when the relationship turned serious, they kept it under the radar until recently. Kroeger said, "I try not to take too much interest in the world's opinion of our relationship. I just know the both of us are very happy."
Nickelback is just starting a two-month European tour and Kroeger said that Lavigne has an open invitation to join him on the road whenever she wants, explaining, "She'll come over and spend some time (with me) when she's got time. They're going to throw a lot of stuff on her plate with the new record."
Kroeger presented Lavigne with a 14-carat diamond engagement ring when he popped the question. A source close to her family told People, "He makes her so happy. Both of their families could not be more excited."
This will be the first time that Kroeger walks down the aisle, and the second for Lavigne: she ended her marriage to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley in 2009 after three years.
