30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto received his first-ever Oscar nomination on Thursday morning (January 16th), for Best Supporting Actor, for his portrayal of a transgender AIDS victim in Dallas Buyers Club. Leto said in a statement, "I am absolutely blown away by this incredible nomination. I never in my life thought I would have the opportunity to even write these words. Thank you so much to all my fellow AMPAS acting branch members for this honor. Today you not only honor me but also all those around the world living with AIDS and all those we have lost to this disease."

  • Dallas Buyers Club was nominated for a total of six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey.
  • Leto won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor last Sunday (January 12th) for his work in the film.
  • Leto, who had been acting for years before launching 30 Seconds To Mars, told Variety that many people now think of him as a musician trying to make it as an actor. He explained, "There are people who think Dallas Buyers Club is my first movie. I’ve become a musician looking for an acting job, rather than an actor looking to make an album."
  • The actor turned singer told us a while back that fans of his two careers often cross over: "I have people that come to the show that are like, 'Oh my God, I've had your CD for months and you're the guy in that movie, huh?' Or else people will come and say, 'Hey, I loved Requiem, will you sign my CD, you guys are my favorite band.' So there's some cross-pollinization there, and there's people that probably don't like the music and like the films, or people that like the music and don't like the films as well."
  • Leto's first film role was in How To Make An American Quilt in 1995, seven years before 30 Seconds To Mars released its self-titled debut album. He has also appeared in movies such as Fight Club, Requiem For A Dream and Girl Interrupted.
  • 30 Seconds To Mars begins an extensive world tour later this month in support of its fourth album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams. But you can bet that Leto will be back for the Oscars, which will take place on March 2nd in Los Angeles.
