Blink-182 will release a new digital EP by Christmas after spending four days last week recording a batch of new songs in a Los Angeles studio, according to Rolling Stone. Drummer Travis Barker said that he thinks this material is a vast improvement on the trio's 2011 reunion album, Neighborhoods. He explained, "To me already, this EP is a hundred times better than Neighborhoods because we're all in a room together."

The band recorded most of Neighborhoods separately, with Barker and bassist Mark Hoppus emailing tracks back and forth with singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge, who worked in his own studio.

DeLonge said at the time that recording this way was a success for the band: "It's been a real joy to modernize what we do, but also to feel really free and creative, and be able to create with the technology too. And that's the different thing. We don't just have to -- you know, we grew up having to write it all out in a garage or a bedroom and then go in and record it as quick as we can. But now that we own our own studios, we're really able to dig in deep and do stuff that's avant-garde and do stuff that is very classic at the same time."

But now Barker said, "There's some songs on there that I love, but for the most part it was disconnected. It was like, 'You do this part in your studio, and then you're gonna play on it and send it back to me.' When we're not in the studio together, you don't have the opportunity to gel off each other."

Finally, Barker said that he himself was not in the best shape while recording Neighborhoods, and was still recovering from the terrible 2008 plane crash that nearly killed him. He said, "I was still healing. I had scabs all over my body and was, like, a bloody mess. It was just way too soon."

The five-song EP that the band has now recorded will be its first as an independent artist in nearly two decades -- the band left Interscope Records last month.

The trio plans to head back to the studio in February to begin writing and recording their next full-length album, with plans to release it near the end of 2013.
