Deftones invited the son of ailing bass player Chi Cheng onstage with them in Sacramento on Wednesday night (October 10th), according to Loudwire. Cheng has been in a semi-comatose state for nearly four years after sustaining head injuries in a November 2008 car accident. At the band's show in the California capital -- which is also Deftones' hometown -- they invited Gabe Cheng to play bass on the song "Root" as the audience gave him a deafening welcome.
Deftones is on the road to promote its upcoming seventh album, Koi No Yokan, which arrives on November 13th.
Koi No Yokan is the second album, following 2010's Diamond Eyes, that the band has recorded with Sergio Vega on bass as a fill-in for Chi.
The group plays on Friday night (October 12th) in Portland, Oregon, and has dates booked through November 21st, when the trek closes in Los Angeles.
Chi Cheng continues to recuperate at home in a minimally conscious state, although he has battled pneumonia and infections in the past year.
