The Airborne Toxic Event, the Black Keys, Death Cab For Cutie, Fun. and others have earned spots on a new LA Weekly list of the "worst hipster bands of all time." The newspaper introduces the list by saying, "Most of today's 20 and 30-something bands from Silver Lake (Los Angeles) and Williamsburg (Brooklyn) sound shockingly similar. They're all playing variations of retro garage and soul music . . . all the while clad in vintage garb likely infested with lice. We're not saying that they should be outlawed by, like, Congress or something. Just that they should be avoided."
The Black Keys just squeaked onto the list at Number 20, with the article saying that the duo "stand at the very vanguard of posh cracker blues rock, displaying a lack of authenticity that would make John Fogerty blush. Further, whereas Jack White can actually play, Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach is more concerned with beard grooming and disheveling his hair."
Auerbach told us that he thinks he and Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney do make music that's authentic and sincere: "I just think it's who we are. It's not really anything that we did, it's just who we are. How do you get soul? (laughs) You don't really teach that. It's just, you got it or you don't, and I think we both sort of understand when something sounds soulful or kind of honest, I guess."
Topping the list was Bon Iver, with Tune-Yards, Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes and Grizzly Bear rounding out the rest of the top five.
The Airborne Toxic Event made it to Number Eight, while Death Cab For Cutie was Number 15 on the list and Fun. was Number 17.
