Linkin Park leads the artists representing rock music at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, for which nominations were announced on Tuesday (July 31st). Linkin Park is up for Best Rock Video and Best Visual Effects for "Burn It Down," the first single and video from the band's latest album, Living Things. Linkin Park faces competition in the Best Rock Video category from the Black Keys' "Lonely Boy," Jack White's "Sixteen Saltines," Coldplay's "Paradise" and Imagine Dragons' "It's Time."
Coldplay's video with Rihanna for the band's "Princess Of China" is also up for prizes in the Best Direction and Best Cinematography categories.
Other notable nominations for modern rock acts include Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" earning nods for Video of the Year and Best Editing, Rise Against getting a Best Video with a Message nomination for "The Ballad of Hollis Brown," and Fun.'s "We Are Young" landing nominations for Best New Artist and Best Pop Video.
Voting is now open to the public and fans can vote on all the categories through August 24th at VMA.MTV.com. The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards take place on September 6th at 8:00 p.m. ET, live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Linkin Park recently earned the distinction of having more Number One albums on the Billboard 200 chart than any other act this century when Living Things debuted in the top spot. Frontman Chester Bennington said on a recent call with reporters what that meant to the band: "It's cool. I never would have thought of that statistic being one that's attached to Linkin Park. I've always felt that we've just made the best record that we could make at the time and it's really more of a testament to our fans than it is to us. It really is a testament to how enthusiastic our fanbase is about what we do in the studio. The true test of whether or not what we've done is good or not is obviously how well those songs hold up over time."
Linkin Park's last album, 2010's A Thousand Suns, also topped the chart with first-week sales of 241,000 copies.
The band will co-headline the Honda Civic Tour this summer with Incubus, beginning in Bristow, Virginia on August 11th.
