Singer/songwriter Gotye has let fans know that he is alive and well after rumors circulated over the weekend on Twitter that he had committed suicide. According to Jam! Music, Gotye was reported to have shot himself in the head, leading to a flood of tributes on the social networking site. Gotye himself finally put the speculation to rest by going on Twitter to announce, "I'm not dead."
A member of Gotye's backing band, Tim Shiel, also posted a message online, joking, "It saddens me to confirm the news of Gotye's passing -- he suffered cardiac arrest while flying a unicorn over a double rainbow."
The story originated with a fake item that was posted at CNN's website as part of its "iReport" social network.
Gotye's smash song, "Somebody That I Used To Know," has topped four different radio charts, including Modern Rock, Triple A, Hot AC and Pop.
The song is found on his most recent album, Making Mirrors.
Gotye recently unveiled the details of a lengthy North American tour that will kick off on August 22nd in Morrison, Colorado, finishing two months later on October 13th with a performance at the Austin City Limits festival in Austin, Texas
