Nine Inch Nails fans have blasted a political organization co-founded by Liz Cheney, daughter of the former vice-president, after a spokesperson for Keep America Safe called Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and other musicians "pathetic" for their stand condemning the use of music to torture U.S. detainees. Spokesperson Debra Burlingame told the conservative Washington Times, "It's almost laughable to think that heavy metal bands like Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against The Machine have a moral authority on national security issues. They're worried about torture of hardcore terrorists? This is really something I would expect to read in the Onion."

According to TwentyFourBit.com, NIN fan site The NIN Hotline has launched an email campaign demanding a "public apology by the group's founder, Liz Cheney, to Trent Reznor, Tom Morello, and all the other 'immoral musicians' they've insulted."

Activist organization New Security Action has noted the campaign, saying they "applaud the efforts of The NIN Hotline."

Reznor, Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Jackson Browne, Roseanne Cash and others joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo last month, demanding that the U.S. detention center on Cuba be shut down. The artists also demanded that the U.S. government release the names of songs that were played at deafening volume for hours or days on end to torture prisoners since 2002.

Morello said in a statement, "The fact that music I helped create was used in crimes against humanity sickens me."
