My Chemical Romance singer and comic book writer Gerard Way announced this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con that he is working on a new comic book as well as the next set of issues in his Umbrella Academy series. Way told RollingStone.com that the new book, called The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, was co-written with friend Shaun Simon, who was in an early band with My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero.
Way described it as being "from the perspective of a gang, because
that's basically what a young band is. You stop being a gang at a
certain point, but you always chase that feeling."
The third Umbrella Academy series, meanwhile, is titled Hotel Oblivion.
Way said that the series is "pulling further away from what people
think a superhero comic, or even a comic, can be. It's going to trigger
a major event that needs to happen in the comic. I'm very excited for
it."
Way also discussed the new My Chemical Romance
album, saying the band is "right in the middle of it." He added, "The
songs are all wildly different, but the one I'm really excited about is
called 'Death Before Disco.' It's a completely different sound for the
band -- it's like an anti-party song that you can party to . . . To me,
it's the greatest song we've ever written -- it's my favorite MCR song."
My Chemical Romance is working with Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen producer Brendan O'Brien on the new album, which will follow up 2006's concept record, The Black Parade.
Way won an Eisner Award, the highest honor in the comic book industry, for the first series of The Umbrella Academy. The book is now being developed as a movie by Universal Pictures.
